BIO

John Mahoney was an English-American actor who was born in Blackpool, England on June 20, 1940. He grew up in Manchester and moved to the United States in 1959, where he became a citizen in 1959. Mahoney became interested in acting later in life, after working as a teacher and editor for many years.


Mahoney made his Broadway debut in 1986 in the play "The House of Blue Leaves" by John Guare. He played the role of Artie Shaughnessy, a zookeeper who dreams of being a Hollywood songwriter. Mahoney received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance in the play. He later reprised the role in the 1987 film adaptation of the play, which starred Ben Stiller and directed by John Guare.
Mahoney appeared in several other Broadway productions throughout his career, including "Orphans" by Lyle Kessler in 1985, "Prelude to a Kiss" by Craig Lucas in 1990, and "The Man Who Came to Dinner" by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart in 2000. He also appeared in off-Broadway productions, including "The Seafarer" by Conor McPherson in 2007.
Mahoney was best known for his role as Martin Crane in the hit television series "Frasier," which aired from 1993 to 2004. Mahoney played the father of Frasier Crane, a radio psychiatrist played by Kelsey Grammer. Mahoney won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for his work on the show. He also appeared in several films throughout his career, including "Moonstruck" in 1987, "Say Anything..." in 1989, and "Primal Fear" in 1996.
Mahoney continued to work in television and film throughout the 2000s and 2010s. He appeared in several episodes of the television series "In Treatment" in 2008, and had a recurring role on the show "Hot in Cleveland" from 2011 to 2014. Mahoney also provided the voice of Preston Whitmore in the animated film "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" in 2001.
Mahoney's most recent work was in the film "Flarsky," which was released in 2019. The film starred Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron, and Mahoney played the role of Mr. Haroldson. He passed away on February 4, 2018 at the age of 77. Mahoney was remembered by his colleagues and fans as a talented actor with a unique voice and a warm personality.
