John Kuether has had a long association with The Phantom of the Opera, including ten
years with the Broadway production. He has sung with the opera companies of Santa
Fe, Houston, Seattle, and Philadelphia, and was chosen by Leonard Bernstein to
perform the role of Doc in his A Quiet Place with the Vienna State Opera. John can be
heard on recordings of A Quiet Place and Philip Glass’s La Belle et la Bête, and he has
previously performed in L’histoire du soldat with conductors Alan Gilbert of the New York
Philharmonic and Kent Nagano of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Among his
favorite roles are Cervantes/Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha and Frederik in A Little
Night Music, and he played the title role in staged versions of the Schumann/Lord Byron
Manfred with both the Seattle Symphony and the American Symphony Orchestra in
Avery Fischer Hall in New York. In a review of Manfred in the New York Times, Paul
Griffiths wrote, “John Kuether – looking fully Byronic, with his dark curls, noble mien and
loose white shirt – spoke with tremendous power and beauty throughout the long title role.
Since he was defying the universe, he certainly scared away any worry that the grand style
of acting might have outlived its usefulness. Here was Manfred, a blasted and burning
soul.”
