Review: BANDSTAND at Playhouse On Park
What did our critic think of BANDSTAND at Playhouse On Park? The multi-award winning Broadway musical Bandstand has arrived at Playhouse on Park with bells on (That pun is for the horn section.) With music by Richard Oberacker and book and lyrics by Oberacker and Robert Taylor, Bandstand is set just after the end of World War II. It tells the story about a group of six veterans and a war widow who struggle to cope and find their way back to normal lives. Battling survivor’s guilt, amongst other excruciating mental and physical ailments, they turn to music and form a band with the goal of winning a national song contest.

Tonight marks the official opening of the world premiere of Cruise at the Duchess Theatre in the West End (where it is running through to 13 June, prior to the return of the long-running hit The Play That Goes Wrong). BroadwayWorld's Tom Hayden Millward interviewed the show's writer/performer Jack Holden, who has starred as Albert in War Horse in the West End and whose other London credits include the RSC's Oppenheimer and Almeida Theatre's Ink (seen on Broadway in 2019).

As an actor, Jack Holden has appared onstage in such hit plays as War Horse and Ink and has now written a new solo venture for himself to perform: Cruise, which tells of a young man called Michael who is diagnosed with HIV in 1984 and told he has four years to live at most. Directed by Bronagh Lagan, the play will reopen the Duchess Theatre, preceded by a streamed film version of the material online.

The elaborate stage production stars a cast of 20+ dancers and musicians from such sensations as "Riverdance" and "Lord of the Dance," and bursts with riveting jigs, reels and haunting ballads. Created by Chris Hannon, former principal dancer for "Lord of the Dance," "Murphy's Celtic Legacy" is drawn from Irish folklore and centers on an original tale developed by Hannon, who is the show's dance lead. The tale culminates with an epic battle between good and evil, a stand-off prompted by Kings & Queens, rebels and magic. The Murphy clan are at the heart of the drama as they flee the corrupt tyrants of their native Eire in search of a better future, a quest for peace that vanquishes evil.

The 19 dancers and seven-piece band weave an original tale drawn from Irish folklore-a tale of Kings and Queens, rebels and magic, epic battles between good and evil.
