Virginia Arts Festival Announces World Premiere Performances Of Two New Operas

Virginia Arts Festival will present the world premiere performances of two new one-act operas at Norfolk's Attucks Theatre. Both will be presented on Friday, June 12 at 7:30pm and Saturday, June 13 at 7:30pm. The operas were developed through the Festival's John Duffy Institute for New Opera, which seeks out and supports the work of opera composer/librettist teams by providing professional mentorship and a professional process for the development of their new work. The Institute is named for the late composer and founder of Meet The Composer, John Duffy. Duffy himself was a prolific composer of more than 300 works, including Emmy Award-winning television scores and music for opera, film, and theater. The Duffy Institute is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Friedrich Ludwig Diehn Fund of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, and receives the support of Old Dominion University's F. Ludwig Diehn Composers Room.

Hailed for its "compelling and innovative programming (WQXR Radio)," dell'Arte Opera Ensemble today announced its 17th annual summer festival: Voices from the Tower exclusively featuring works composed by women.  The season will include the commissioned world premiere of Princess Maleine, with a libretto (based on the play by Maurice Maeterlinck) by Bea Goodman and music by Whitney George, and the first opera ever composed by a woman, La liberazione di Ruggiero by Francesca Caccini (1625), with a libretto by Ferdinando Saracinelli.  A scenes program will feature Cendrillon by Pauline Viardot and other operatic scenes by Thea Musgrave, Victoria Bond and others, and "Les Boulangers" will be a recital of songs featuring the works of Lili and Nadia Boulanger, their contemporaries and students.
York Theatre Company Presents MIDNIGHT AT THE NEVER GET

The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and rediscovery of musical gems from the past, presents the Off-Broadway premiere of the acclaimed new musical Midnight at The Never Get, with book, music, and lyrics by Mark Sonnenblick, co-conceived by Sam Bolen, by arrangement with Visceral Entertainment and Mark Cortale Productions.  Directed by Max Friedman, with choreography by Andrew Palermo, and music direction/arrangements by Adam Podd, the cast will feature Sam Bolen, Jeremy Cohen, and Jon J. Fort Worth Opera Announces World Premiere Opera COMPANIONSHIP & Full Casting For 2019 Festival Season

Fort Worth Opera (FWOpera) announced today the casts and creative teams for the 2019 Festival season, including the world premiere of composer-librettist Rachel J. Peters's delightfully wicked opera, Companionship. Adapted from the short story by internationally bestselling author Arthur Phillips, this delicious dark comedy about an obsession with dough, mirrors our modern world, where what we consume becomes all-consuming. Six Composer-Librettist Teams Selected for Fort Worth Opera's Diverse 2018 Showcase

Fort Worth Opera (FWOpera) announced today the names of the six composer and librettist teams whose unpublished works have been selected for the company's sixth annual, critically-acclaimed new works series, Frontiers - funded in part by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Held during the final week of the 2018 FWOpera Festival, these selected pieces will be presented in two separate showcases of three works each on Wednesday, May 2 from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm, and Thursday, May 3 from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm, on the stage of Bass Performance Hall. Featuring 20-minute excerpts of each selected piece, these brand-new operas will be sung by artists from the 2018 FWOpera Festival with piano accompaniment.

The American Theatre Wing (Heather Hitchens, President & CEO) announced today that the 2018 Jonathan Larson® Grants recipients areJay Adana (music and lyrics), Andrew R. Butler & Andrew Farmer (music, lyrics, and book), Emily Kaczmarek & Zoe Sarnak (music, lyrics, and book), and Mark Sonnenblick(music and lyrics). Four prestigious, unrestricted grants of $10,000 each, as well as additional support in the form of residencies, concerts, and recording grants, totaling over $48,000, will be presented on Monday, March 19, 2018 at a private event at the WNYC Greene Space. The event will feature special performances of the recipients' work.
