Joe McKernan started his acting career at the University of Delaware, in 1987, with the Harrington Theater Arts Company in a production of Godspell. His career continued working in Dinner Theater in Bucks County, PA. Joe enrolled in the Theater Department at Temple University in the Fall of 1988, where he performed in the 20th Anniversary production of Hair. After graduating in the Spring of 1990, Joe accepted a Fellowship to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and performed at the Krannert Center for Performing Arts for the next 3 years. After earning his MFA in 1993, Joe continued his acting career in Chicago, performing at the Goodman Theatre, Apple Tree Theatre, Oak Park Festival Theatre, New American Theatre and more. He worked with upstart theatre companies such as Shakespeare's Motley Crew, The Defiant Theatre Company and Erin Go Bragh! Along with acting Joe did some modeling, teaching and fight choreography for the stage.
While acting in Chicago, Joe married his wife Anne in 1994. Their son, Jack, was born in 1997. After understudying the roles of Biff & Happy in the 1998 production of Death of a Salesman, at the Goodman Theatre, starring Brian Dennehy, Joe took a break from acting to raise a family. The McKernan Family relocated to Bucks County, PA. What was intended to be a "short break" turned into 10 years, but in 2009, Joe returned to the stage in an Off-Off Broadway Production of The Businessman at the Richmond Shepard Theatre. Joe returned to New York to perform in Yakup Almelek's 2nd play, The Awakening. Both were directed by Annie Ward.
Since 2009, Joe has performed in several plays for Newtown Arts Company in Bucks County, The Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia as well as bit parts in various television shows and commercials.
