Review: SWEENEY TODD Strikes All the Right Notes at the Marroney Theatre
I've just highlighted a long list deserving of recognition, if for no other reason than to remind audiences of the invisible force that fuels this pre-eminent theatre department. I'm aware of the unresolved public trauma caused by the university's decision to discontinue the program. Intentional or not, SWEENEY is the apt choice; the metaphor of slitting one's throat resonates with an aggrieved following, for that's what it must feel like to lose a vital artistic resource. And that, my good friends, is the real tragedy.
BWW Review: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Feels New Again in Outstanding Garden Theatre Production
Director Roberta Emerson has devised an intriguing way to approach the story's outer framework without altering the libretto. The story opens not with an unseen narrator recounting the enchantress's spell on a prideful prince and his servants but instead with a young Black girl (played sweetly by Gabriella Milchman) who opens a storybook in a modern-day bedroom and reads those words aloud from it, soon seeing herself in the story - just in time for the glorious opening notes of 'Belle'...

A tale as old as time comes to Winter Garden! Featuring Music by Alan Menken, Lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and a Book by Linda Woolverton, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will captivate audiences of all ages with the story of Belle and the Beast’s magical castle. Directed by the Garden’s Artistic Directing Consultant Roberta Emerson, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast runs April 22 - May 22, 2022.
Next At The Garden: MATILDA THE MUSICAL!
Audiences in Central Florida will delight in seeing the classic characters of Matilda, Miss Honey, and Headmistress Trunchbull live on stage! Directed by Garden Theatre's Artistic Director Joseph C. Walsh, the production will run November 19 - December 20, with an ASL-interpreted performance on Thursday, December 3 and a Sensory-Friendly performance on Saturday, December 12. Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical is presented by AdventHealth.
