Spoiler Alert! Recap and Review: Night Two of THE VOICE's Battle Rounds 10/14; Full Results, Reviews, & Pictures!
I have been pretty vocal about the fact that I don't love THE VOICE's Battle Rounds. The whole point of a singing competition is to out sing your competitors. However, in the Battles, your future on the show is, in part, in the hands of your collaborator; how does that make sense? Even if the two singers create a great duet, by definition, each has to play background singer at some point in the song. How does that help you determine who is the better of the two singers? If the goal is to find the best singer possible, then you should let the singers give you their best possible performance.
Spoiler Alert! THE VOICE Recap for Blind Audition Night Three 9/29; Full Results!
The first two nights of THE VOICE's Blind Auditions last week, presented us with a lot of ups, but a few uncharacteristic downs from a show that prides itself on having the best singers on reality TV, and the third night wasn't much different. That being said NBC's megahit still provides the most compelling audition process on TV, and makes other singing shows (cough AMERICAN IDOL) look like the minor leagues in terms of talent.

BWW Reviews: Main Street Theater's HEARTBREAK HOUSE is Thought Provoking Social Commentary
George Bernard Shaw was profoundly affected by World War I. His first full-length piece following the war was HEARTBREAK HOUSE, which exposes the devastating aspects of the idle and self-indulgent British upper echelon. Main Street Theater is giving Houston audiences heavy social commentary, featuring Shaw's celebrated wit, with their well-executed production of HEARTBREAK HOUSE.

BWW Reviews: Bayou City Concert Musical's CHEEK TO CHEEK: IRVING BERLIN IN THE 1930s is Spirited Entertainment
Just as exciting as the annual summer concert presentation of a more-or-less forgotten hit musical from yesteryear are Bayou City Concert Musicals' fundraising cabaret performances. Kicking off their 2014 season, Paul Hope has programmed an evening of Irving Berlin's hit songs for the 1930s. In this set, titled CHEEK TO CHEEK: IRVING BERLIN IN THE 1930s, there are numerous favorites that left audiences tittering excitedly from the time they took their seats until the program ended.
BWW Reviews: Main Street Theater's A CIVIL WAR CHRISTMAS: AN AMERICAN MUSICAL CELEBRATION is Brilliantly Crafted and Deeply Moving
Every year, the holiday season is marked by gooey, theatrical mind-candy confections. The syrupy and saccharine spectacles fill audiences with joy and boil pots all over town. Yet, for 2013 Main Street Theater is taking a bold risk and producing the brilliantly crafted and deeply moving Houston Premiere of A CIVIL WAR CHRISTMAS: AN AMERICAN MUSICAL CELEBRATION by Paula Vogel, with music by Daryl Waters. The play is not the light-hearted, feel-good fare audiences have come to expect; however, I defy anyone to walk away from a performance without feeling moved and permanently altered.
