BIO

Joan Kane (Director) was named one of 2011 People of the Year in indie theatre by nytheatre.com and was awarded Best Director of a Reading in the 2011 Planet Connections Theatre Festivity and nominated for three awards in the 2012 Festivity including Best Director of a play. She has directed Play Nice! off-Broadway at the 59e59 Theaters, Aliens with Extraordinary Skills by Saviana Stanescu at Theater 54, The God Particle and Pizza Man at the Bridge Theater. She has directed plays and readings at the Lark Play Development Center, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Theater for the New City, the Samuel French Short Play Festival, the Dramatists Guild, The Lambs Club, The Players Club, the Actors Studio, and for the Scandinavian American Theater Company. She has an MFA in Directing from The New School, an MS in Museum Education from Bank Street and is a member of the Dramatists Guild, the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and the League of Professional Theatre Women.

Voter Registration and Talkbacks Will Accompany Production Of SUSAN B. at Theater for the New City

Theater for the New City (TNC), 155 First Ave., will present 'Susan B.' by Toby Armour, a bioplay on sufferagist Susan B. Anthony directed by Joan Kane, October 12 to 16. In conjunction with the play, League of Women Voters of New York will conduct voter registration in the theater lobby (each performance) and talkbacks on the midterm elections featuring representatives of the League (Friday at 8:00 PM and Saturday at 8:00 PM).

We are living in a time of deliberate campaigns of voter suppression through a variety of means.  Coincidentally, or maybe not so coincidentally, we're living in a time when women's rights are increasingly under attack.  All of which makes it seem obligatory to revisit the life struggles of historic female activists and be inspired by their brave campaigns for fundamental rights.
