BWW Reviews: Park Square Theatre's 33 VARIATIONS Combines Fascinating Music History with Poignant Family Drama

33 VARIATIONS is part fascinating music history, part poignant family drama, and part classical music concert, which adds up to an entertaining evening of theater. Park Square's production of the Moises Kaufman play satisfies on several levels - intellectual, emotional, musical - and features a great seven-person cast (plus one talented pianist) who bring the past and present together in an intriguing way. This is just one of two shows currently playing at Park Square; St. Paul is the place to be for quality theater.
Park Square to Present 33 VARIATIONS

Park Square continues its 2014-2015 season next month with Moises Kaufman's 33 VARIATIONS. The acclaimed author of Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde and The Laramie Project explores genius, obsession and the ability to connect against all odds. Edwin Strout and Karen Landry* play Ludwig van Beethoven and Dr. Katherine Brandt, separated by a continent and a century, but little else. Entertainment Weekly hailed 33 VARIATIONS as 'a convincing case for the genius of emotional variation in each of us, whether we're Beethoven or not.'

The Christmas Schooner spreads Christmas Cheer, 11/20-12/19

The Christmas Schooner is the heart-warming musical about a German-American shipping captain and his crew who braved the icy waters of Lake Michigan to bring Tannenbäume (Christmas trees) to the immigrant families of Chicago. Heartfelt storytelling - with wonderful music and dance - captures the true spirit of the holidays, celebrating the joy of giving and the importance of sharing traditions between generations and between neighbors. 'In a world of ‘me first' mentalities, this story of an immigrant family is one of love and sharing; a generosity of spirit that drives people to use the skills and resources at their disposal to reach out to those who are less fortunate,' says History Theatre artistic director Ron Peluso. 'That is why The Christmas Schooner is so popular; it reflects the best of what our nation and community can be, at the holidays and throughout the year.'
