Jed Bernstein is a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, having worked in various roles on Broadway, in film, and in television. Born in New York City in 1956, Bernstein attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with a degree in English literature. He began his career in the theater industry as a press agent, working for the Shubert Organization and the National Theatre of the Deaf.
In 1989, Bernstein co-founded the Broadway advertising agency Premier. The agency quickly became one of the most successful in the industry, working on campaigns for hit shows such as The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables. In 1994, Bernstein sold his stake in Premier and became the executive director of the Commercial Theater Institute, a training program for aspiring producers.
Bernstein's success at the Commercial Theater Institute led to his appointment as the president of the Broadway League in 1995. During his tenure, he oversaw the organization's efforts to promote Broadway as a tourist destination and worked to address issues such as ticket scalping and theater security. He also played a key role in the development of the Times Square Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Times Square area.
In 2005, Bernstein left the Broadway League to become the president of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. During his tenure, he oversaw the renovation of the Alice Tully Hall and the development of the Lincoln Center's new campus plan. He also worked to expand the Lincoln Center's programming to include more contemporary and popular music, as well as theater productions.
In 2013, Bernstein returned to Broadway as a producer, working on shows such as After Midnight and Driving Miss Daisy. He also served as the executive producer of the Tony Awards from 2013 to 2015. In 2015, he produced the Broadway musical Dames at Sea, which starred Bernadette Peters and received positive reviews from critics.
In addition to his work in the theater industry, Bernstein has also worked in film and television. He served as the executive producer of the film The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland and worked on the television series The Cosby Show and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
