James-Allen had his Off-Broadway writing debut with the production of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and Other Story Books at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Condensed Classics, for which he wrote music, toured nationally for Theatreworks USA. His Drama Desk honored musical In Transit, Broadway's First A Cappella Musical, for which he wrote book, music, and lyrics, ran Off-Broadway at Primary Stages in 2010 and had its Broadway premiere at Circle in the Square during the 2016-2017 season. A member emeritus of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Advanced Workshop, he received the Harrington Award for outstanding creative achievement. His music has been performed at the O'Neill Musical Theater Conference, the BMI Industry Cabaret, the Century Center’s New Artists Festival, the New York Fringe Festival, the Duplex Cabaret, the Donnell Library Songbook series, the York Theatre Developmental Reading series, the Kaufman Center’s Bound for Broadway series, nationally syndicated XM radio as well as various other nightclubs and venues around New York City. James-Allen sang a cappella in college as a member of the Yale Whiffenpoofs.
