BWW Review: THE SUNSET LIMITED at Bunbury Theatre
Writer Cormac McCarthy subtitled his play The Sunset Limited, 'a novel in dramatic form', and that immediately calls into question exactly what is going on here. Basically it is two guys talking for a couple of hours. They also have coffee and eat. White (J. Barrett Cooper) is a professor whose suicide attempt was thwarted earlier by Black (Clyde Tyrone Harper). Now they are in Black's apartment engaged in conversation about theology, morality, and the nature of human existence.
BWW Review: THE TRAGEDY OF KING LEAR at Kentucky Shakespeare
Among the greatest of the plays written by William Shakespeare, there are several titular roles that are each a veritable Mt. Everest for actors; Charlton Heston called them the 'Man-killers', and I doubt they are any easier for women. Of these, the monarch named Lear stands as a particularly daunting challenge. It has often been said that if you are old enough to truly understand the unique blend of aging, madness, and arrogance required to play it, you may be too old to pull it off onstage.
BWW Review: AS YOU LIKE IT at Kentucky Shakespeare
There is something special about this time of year. The school schedule is winding down, the sun shines a bit longer in the day, fireflies come out of their hibernation and the Kentucky Shakespeare Company begins their season. This year will mark the venerable company's 59th Anniversary and they are still going strong. So what magic is weaved that keeps this program going year after year? The answer is quite simple really and can be summed up in a few words: imagination, reinvention, education, and dedication. All of these were on full display in the season opener of As You Like It.

July 9th-21st all three performances will be presented in repertory. The season will be dedicated to the late Bekki Jo Schneider, former Producer of Kentucky Shakespeare and founder Doug Ramey's immediate successor. Last year we lost our dear friend Bekki Jo. She was instrumental in helping make the company what it is today, not only during her tenure here as an actor and leader but for years after as a mentor to me and to so many others in our community. We dedicate this season to her as we celebrate her life and legacy, said Matt Wallace, Producing Artistic Director.
BWW Review: HENRY IV, PART 1 at Kentucky Shakespeare
What more pleasant way to spend a summer evening than outdoors in the heart of Old Louisville, surrounded by green space, with some of the loveliest turns of phrase ever written in the English language wafting on the breeze? Thanks to Kentucky Shakespeare and its supporters, we can do just that - free of charge - virtually all summer long in Louisville. What a treat, indeed!
BWW Review: THE COMEDY OF ERRORS at Kentucky Shakespeare
Kentucky Shakespeare Festival opens a new summer season with laughs and gusto in The Comedy of Errors. A delightful romp at the C. Douglas Ramey Amphitheater in Central Park, the play serves up boundless humor in a manner comparable to a Bugs Bunny cartoon set in Greece. The rain did not hinder a single beat of the opening night performance and the modest audience was not disappointed. A comedy indeed, this production has everything: mistaken identities, sight gags, pratfalls, puns, and sexual innuendos. This show proves that Shakespeare knew what he was doing as he helped define comedic tropes and that the Festival in Central Park is back for a great season.

BWW Review: COYOTE UGLY at The Alley Theater
After a two-year stint in California, J Barrett Cooper's directorial touch has returned to Louisville stages. The founder of Savage Rose Classical Theatre here turns his attention to material that is world away from the period pieces that dominated his work in the last ten years. Coyote Ugly is a brutal, unstinting journey into the darkest of hearts.
BWW Review: RICHARD II at Kentucky Shakespeare
This Royal Throne of KingsNeill Robertson is having a very good year. After a triumphant turn in Hedwig and the Angry Inch just one month ago, he here presents us with a Richard II that is nothing less than a lesson for us all.
