BIO

J. Mark McVey is an American actor and singer best known for his work in Broadway musicals. He was born in 1960 in Joplin, Missouri, and grew up in a musical family. He began performing in local theater productions as a child and went on to study voice and theater at Missouri Southern State University.



McVey's Broadway debut came in 1987 when he was cast as Chris in the original production of Miss Saigon. He went on to star in the national tour of the show and later reprised his role on Broadway. McVey's powerful tenor voice and emotional performances earned him critical acclaim and a loyal fan base.

In 1994, McVey took on the role of Jean Valjean in the Broadway production of Les Misérables. He received rave reviews for his portrayal of the iconic character and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical. McVey continued to perform in Les Misérables for several years, both on Broadway and on tour.

McVey's other Broadway credits include the original productions of The Who's Tommy, The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public, and The Phantom of the Opera. He also appeared in the national tours of The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and The Three Musketeers.

In addition to his work on stage, McVey has made numerous appearances on television, including performances on The Today Show, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, and The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. He has also recorded several albums, including Broadway Classics and If You Really Knew Me.

McVey's most recent Broadway credit was in the 2012 revival of Les Misérables, in which he played the role of Bishop Myriel. He received critical acclaim for his performance and was praised for his ability to bring a new depth and complexity to the character.

Outside of his career in entertainment, McVey is a passionate advocate for charitable causes. He has worked with organizations such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. McVey has also performed at numerous benefit concerts and events, using his talent and platform to raise awareness and funds for important causes.

McVey's talent, dedication, and philanthropic spirit have made him a beloved figure in the Broadway community and beyond. He continues to perform and inspire audiences with his powerful voice and heartfelt performances.

Birdland Jazz Club and Birdland Theater are pleased to present the schedule for the month of February! At Birdland Jazz Club, catch the iconic Lionel Hampton Big Band Featuring Jason Marsalis, current GRAMMY nominee Catherine Russell, the Birdland debut of AGUAS Trio with Omar Sosa, Yilian Cañizares and Gustavo Ovalles, and iconic vocalist Jane Monheit. Internationally recognized trumpeter Rachel Therrien, the Seth Weaver Big Band, and The Voice contestant Melinda Rose Rodriguez will also be performing upstairs. 
Central Bucks West HS Presents Broadway Night

On Monday, November 4th at 7pm Broadway comes to Doylestown as the Central Bucks West High School Choir presents Broadway Night. The event is hosted by renowned CB West Alumna and Broadway star Jenny Lee Stern (A Christmas Story, Rocky), who is taking a night off from her current show, Forbidden Broadway, to host the event. Joining Ms. Stern this year is Central Bucks East Alumnus Justin Guarini, well known for his success on American Idol. Mr. Guarini went on to Broadway where he performed in Wicked and American Idiot and continues to be active in the entertainment industry. Stern and Guarini will be joined by Mr. Gregg Brandt (Les Mis, Tale of Two Cities) and Mr. J. Mark McVey (Les Mis). The program will be directed by CB West Choir Director, Dr. Joseph Ohrt (Amazing Grace), accompanied by Karen Burgman (Amazing Grace) on piano and Mr. Christopher Smith (Amazing Grace) will act as Master of Ceremonies.
