BWW Review: ACTLab and Pratidhwani's QUEEN Examines the Ethics of Bee Science
I've never been a fan of bees, in fact they terrify me. So, I found it a little ironic that the day I'm supposed to go see a play about bees, Madhuri Shekar's 'Queen' from ACTLab and Pratidhwani, that one of the little bastards decides to up and sting me for no reason. Sure, they're important for our ecosystem and without them we would end up with severe food shortages, but they don't need to be such jerks about it. And that's the central conceit of Shekar's play (their place in the ecosystem, not them stinging me). And while the play was intriguing, at times the actors didn't all seem to be a part of the same play, at least not at the same time.
BWW Review: MAIDEN VOYAGE at West of Lenin is All Greek to Me
A well-intentioned show is sometimes just that, and unfortunately, Parlay company's first full-length production 'Maiden Voyage' falls under that category. This modern adaptation of Homer's 'The Odyssey' (Or is it a reworking? Or is it a hypothesized retelling of 'herstory'?) has two primary differences from the original: Penelope does not wait 19 years for Odysseus' return faithfully, and Penelope writes 'The Odyssey' instead of Homer. But when an idea does not get fully flushed out, what results is a convoluted plot line that ultimately does not say anything coherent or new.
BWW Review: A Predictable Sitcom with UNEXPECTED WILDERNESS at The Annex Theatre
The Annex Theatre advertises their current production 'Unexpected Wilderness' to be a 'farcical romp'. I saw Jaryl Draper's show at The Annex, and I beg to differ. A farce is a madcap comedy where characters find themselves in extreme, exaggerated, ridiculous situations, and hilarity ensues. A ridiculous situation does not feel ridiculous if it's already been done dozens of times, in dozens of ways. Yes, this play uniquely showcases Bigfoot as a character, but beyond that, all the hijinks among those interacting with Bigfoot in the woods are painfully predictable, making 'Unexpected Wilderness' feel more like a formulaic sitcom.
