BIO

Irene Worth was a British actress who had a long and distinguished career on stage, film, and television. Born on June 23, 1916, in Fairbury, Nebraska, she grew up in the United States and later moved to England where she became a naturalized British citizen in 1943.


Worth made her Broadway debut in 1948 in the play "The Cocktail Party" by T.S. Eliot. She continued to work on Broadway throughout her career, earning critical acclaim for her performances in plays such as "Tiny Alice," "Lost in Yonkers," and "The Visit." In 1965, she won a Tony Award for her performance in "Tiny Alice."
Worth was also a frequent performer with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where she appeared in productions of "King Lear," "The Winter's Tale," and "The Duchess of Malfi," among others. She was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1975 for her services to drama.
In addition to her work on stage, Worth appeared in numerous films and television shows. She had a small but memorable role in the 1978 film "Death on the Nile," based on the Agatha Christie novel. She also appeared in the television series "The Sopranos" and "Law & Order."
Worth was known for her intelligence and wit, as well as her dedication to her craft. She once said, "Acting is not about being famous, it's about exploring the human soul." She continued to work well into her eighties, earning critical acclaim for her performances in plays such as "The Waverly Gallery" and "The Last Yankee."
Worth passed away on March 9, 2002, at the age of 85.
