Born and raised in the Gateway City, Ian, known musically as PALAWN, has become a multi-hyphenate force to be reckoned with in the world of entertainment. Award-winning performer, choreographer, creative director, recording artist, and instructor, Ian's journey has taken him from the MUNY Youth program in St. Louis to the global stage, leaving a trail of accolades, captivating performances, and infectious smiles in his wake.
A true St. Louis luminary, Ian earned his stripes as part of The MUNY Youth program, where he cultivated his love for storytelling, musicality, and dance, setting the stage for a future that would span continents. Armed with a B.F.A. in Music Theatre from Illinois Wesleyan University, Ian took the plunge into the vibrant arts scene of New York City. Since then, his star has continued to rise, with performances and creative endeavors taking him to London, Johannesburg, and northern Italy. Ian's unstoppable spirit, work ethic, and showmanship have not gone unnoticed, earning him a coveted spot among St. Louis Americans' "People on The Move."
Beyond the stage, Ian is a recording artist under the moniker PALAWN, a musical alter ego that has been crafting sonic landscapes since 2014. His debut single, "Juxtapose," released in early 2022, marked the beginning of a musical journey that has seen him captivate audiences worldwide. Under his own music label, ICB Creative Co., Ian continues to unleash his creativity, with more music slated for release in the coming year. Currently gracing stages across North America as Hermes understudy and Swing in Broadway's HADESTOWN, a production boasting 8 TONY® and Grammy awards, Ian Coulter-Buford remains committed to giving back to his roots. Returning to St. Louis to instruct and inspire the next generation, Ian affirms, "Countless people did it for me, so it's only right to do the same."
