BIO

Costume Designer, HYUN SOOK KIM:

Hyun Sook Kim is a professional costume-designer and costume professor at California State University, Fullerton. Kim holds M.F.A. terminal degree from U of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, M.A. at U of Illinois at Chicago and B.A. from Korea University in Seoul. She has over 30 years of experience as an artist and educator, and is internationally recognized for her intensive costume designs in NYC, LA, Toronto, London, Tokyo, Beijing and Seoul. Many of her designs have been seen in large-scale productions in big venues such as the National Theatre of Korea, Seoul Arts Center, other international venues including Wellington Michael Fowler Centre, Melbourne State Theatre, etc. Her design for the mega-scale musical The Last Empress has been presented at NYC Lincoln Center, at LA Kodak Theatre, Schubert Theatre, and at Toronto Hummingbird Center, as well as in London’s West End. The award-winning costume design celebrates its 23rd year’s anniversary of long-run performance in 2018. Across the nation, she has designed for the New York LORT, Capital Repertory Theatre and the AEA theatre company, NYC Pan Asian Repertory Theatre, Human Race Theatre Company, among others. Kim’s designs have received laudatory reviews by The New York Times and many theatre critics. Recently her costume designs have been selected and exhibited in Costume at the Turn of the Century-1990-2015 at The A. A. Bakhrushin Theatre Museum, Moscow and in World State Design 2017 at Taipei, Taiwan. In 2019 summer, Kim's costume works have been selected and presented in Prague Quadrennial 2019 as a part of USA National Design team.

East West Players conclude their 56th season with Prince Gomolvilas’ The Brothers Paranormal opening November 20, 2022 (with previews beginning November 17th).  Jeff Lui directs the cast of David Huynh, Roy Vongtama, Tamika Simpkins, Jasper Louis, Emily Kuroda and Pearrie Hammie. Prince found some time before his lunch to answer a few of my queries.

Pan Asian Repertory Theatre Will Present Re-Envisioned Musical CAMBODIA AGONISTES

Pan Asian Repertory Theatre, supported by a prestigious $35,000 Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, has announced it will present a re-envisioned revival production of Cambodia Agonistes, with play and lyrics by Ernest Abuba and original music by Louis Stewart. Performances are set to begin Monday, May 18, 2020 at 7:30PM for a limited engagement through Sunday afternoon, June 7, 2020 at 2:30PM in The Mezzanine Theatre at A.R.T./NY Theatres (502 West 53rd Street). Opening Night is set for Thursday evening, May 21, 2020 at 7:30PM. Cast will be announced shortly.
