New York Philharmonic Ensembles Series Continues with Three Concerts

The 36th season of the New York Philharmonic Ensembles series - chamber concerts showcasing Musicians from the New York Philharmonic performing classical and modern works they have chosen on select Sunday afternoons at Merkin Hall - will continue this spring with three concerts. Philharmonic musicians will perform works by Mendelssohn and Schubert on March 15, 2020; Vanhal, Mendelssohn, Roussel, and Mozart on April 19, 2020; and Eric Ewazen, Stravinsky, and Dvořák on May 24, 2020.
New York Philharmonic Announces Winter/Spring Ensembles at Merkin Concert Hall

The 34th season of the New York Philharmonic Ensembles series chamber concerts showcasing Musicians from the Orchestra performing classical masterpieces and modern compositions in the intimate setting of Merkin Concert Hall will continue on Sunday, February 18, 2018. The concert will include Beethoven's String Trio, Op. 9, No. 1; Debussy's Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp; and Fibich's Quintet, Op. 42.
Esa-Pekka Salonen to Conduct Davies's FOREST, Stravinsky's FUNERAL SONG & Strauss's ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA

The Marie-Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence Esa-Pekka Salonen will conduct the New York Philharmonic in the U.S. Premiere of Tansy Davies's Forest, the New York Premiere of Stravinsky's recently rediscovered Funeral Song; and Richard Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra.

This week, Mr. van Zweden will lead the Orchestra in Korngold's Violin Concerto, with Hilary Hahn as soloist; Beethoven's Symphony No. 7; and J. Wagenaar's Cyrano de Bergerac Overture, marking the Philharmonic's first time performing the work, tonight, November 26, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 28 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 29 at 8:00 p.m.

In the first program, Mr. van Zweden will conduct Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for Violin and Viola, featuring Acting Concertmaster Sheryl Staples and Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8, tonight, November 20, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 21 at 2:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 22 at 8:00 p.m.

New York Philharmonic Ensembles Set for Merkin Concert Hall November 17, 2013

The New York Philharmonic Ensembles, composed of musicians from the Orchestra, will give its second performance of the 2013–14 season on Sunday, November 17, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at Merkin Concert Hall with a concert featuring L.E. Jadin's Nocturne No. 3 for Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon, and Horn; Nielsen's Woodwind Quintet; and Schubert's String Quintet. The musicians on the program will be violinists Quan Ge and Lisa GiHae Kim; violist Vivek Kamath; cellists Ru-Pei Yeh and Sumire Kudo; flutist Mindy Kaufman; Associate Principal Oboe Sherry Sylar; clarinetist Pascual Marti?nez Forteza; Associate Principal Bassoon Kim Laskowski; and hornists R. Allen Spanjer and Howard Wall.
Photo Flash: Alan Gilbert Conducts NY Phil in Walt Disney Concert Hall Debut

Music Director Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic, America's oldest orchestra, came to Walt Disney Concert Hall in the final event of the LA Phil's 2011/12 Visiting Orchestras series, this Wednesday, May 9. Virtuoso pianist Yefim Bronfman joined the program, performing the West Coast premiere of Piano Concerto No. 2, by New York Philharmonic Composer-in-Residence Magnus Lindberg. Also on the program were Dvorak's Carnival Overture and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. Though Gilbert had previously appeared at Walt Disney Concert Hall (WDCH), most recently during the 2006/07 season, the performance was the New York Philharmonic's WDCH debut. Bach's Cantata No. 51, Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen; Philharmonic bassist David J. Grossman's Mood Swings; Beethoven's Sextet in E-flat major, Op. 81b; and Brahms's String Quintet in G major.
