BWW Reviews: JERSEY BOYS Stuck in One Season
'Jersey Boys,' the hit musical chronicling the story of the Four Seasons, which previously had an extremely successful sit-down production in Chicago, has rolled back into town as a stop on its national tour. All remains intact: The 'Joysy' speak, the high croon of Frankie Valli (played in this production by a charming Hayden Milanes), and the wheeling and dealing with the mob hasn't changed at all since Chicago has last seen the musical. In fact, the production feels almost too exact: the performances (although in very capable and talented hands), feel like they have been directed to model exactly the speech, intonation, and movements of the actors who came before them, who were directed to model exactly the actors who came before them, who were directed to model exactly the actors who came before them...and so on.

BWW Reviews: It's the Story Between the Hits that Makes JERSEY BOYS a Continued Success
The jukebox musical JERSEY BOYS is a crowd-pleaser. The story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons will celebrate 10 years on Broadway this fall and the tour is making its third stop in Minneapolis this week. At times during last night's opening night, the crowd reacted like this was a Four Seasons tribute concert. But it's so much more than that. This jukebox musical is not just hit after hit strung together with some loose threads we're supposed to accept as a plot. Rather this beloved and familiar music is woven into the true life story of the rise and fall of these Hall of Fame rock-and-rollers. It's like an episode of VH1's Behind the Music, revealing that all was not rosy behind those crisp harmonies and sharp dance moves. Fame and celebrity at a young age rarely lead to a smooth road in life. Any show that featured a string of hits from the '60s would be sure to sell out to a population dominated by baby boomers, but it's the clever book that weaves the hits together and tells a story worth hearing that is responsible for JERSEY BOYS' critical success and staying power.
BWW Reviews: JERSEY BOYS - An Electrifying Entertaining Evening
The 60's were an exciting time for music in America, due in no small part to the proliferation of groups with amazing vocal harmonies like The Mamas & Papas, The Beach Boys, Spanky & Our Gang and The Four Seasons. JERSEY BOYS is a jukebox musical based on the song catalog of The Four Seasons; however, unlike most jukebox musicals, JERSEY BOYS features an intelligent script where the songs flow with the story instead of being forced into a storyline. I suspect the participation of Rick Elice, who was also one of the scriptwriters for the charming and witty PETER AND THE STARCATCHER had more than a little to do with the intelligence and theatrical storytelling skill on display here.
