BIO

Gordon Penn is a playwright, American Soldier and theatre educator. Directed by Arthur Makaryan: BLACK GARDEN at the Pleins Feux sur la jeune creation festival at the Théâtre de l’Opprimé, Paris; The Tank NYC (February 6-19, 2019) Shapiro Theatre at Columbia University of New York. Directed by Ann Cooley: INTO THE ZONE at The Pershing Square Signature Theatre, Shapiro Theatre at Columbia University of New York, Shanghai Theatre Academy (Mandarin Translation); THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE at The City College of New York. Military Structure and Costume Consulting: (Opera) AN AMERICAN SOLDIER by David Henry Hwang and Huang Ruo at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis; (Feature film) THE MENTAL STATE. Gordon is a Veteran of the United States Army. While on active duty, Gordon was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Regiment “The Old Guard” Escort To The President of the United States, proudly participating in the 2009 inauguration of the President Barrack Obama. Gordon is currently an Army journalist (46Q) assigned to the 361st Public Affairs Detachment, United States Army Reserve, Fort Totten, Queens. In Los Angeles, Gordon managed actors for several years, guiding the early career of Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls). In Chicago, Gordon studied at The Second City Training Center and The Improv Olympic (IO). B.S. Fordham University 2015; MFA Columbia 2018. At Columbia University Gordon was the Shubert Fellow for 2015-17, Oscar Hammerstein Prize Winner 2018.

Roundabout Announces Winners Of Columbia@Roundabout's 2019 New Play Reading Series

Roundabout Theatre Company and Columbia University School of the Arts have announced the winners of Columbia@Roundabout's 2019 New Play Reading Series. As part of the collaborative partnership between Roundabout Theatre Company and Columbia University, the reading series awards three playwrights from the current MFA program and recent alumni with a cash prize as well as a reading in Roundabout's Rehearsal Hall, followed by a post-reading reception. Five finalists have also received cash prizes in recognition of their exceptional work. No other collaborative partnership in the New York area brings together an esteemed Ivy League MFA program with a Tony Award-winning, not-for-profit theatre. The reading series is made possible by a grant from The Tow Foundation.   
After Paris Premiere, New Play BLACK GARDEN Opens At The Tank

New work by an international group of New York City artists,'Black Garden', which made its world premiere in Paris, France, in September at the Theatre de l'Opprime, will perform its North American premiere at The Tank NYC this February. The play, written by Gordon Penn ('Into The Zone') and directed/produced by Arthur Makaryan (2017-18 Juilliard Opera Directing Fellow) performs February 6, 7, 13, 14 at 8pm and February 9 & 16 at 3pm.
