Riverside Symphony Presents COMPOSERS AT PLAY

Under the baton of music director conductor George Rothman, Riverside Symphony will present the second installment of its 2016-17 season at Alice Tully Hall on Saturday evening, January 28. From Jacques Ibert's effervescent Parisian Music Hall time (Divertissement) to Juan Trigos' endearingly brash bass concerto, a confident assimilation of high and low culture, to a wittily buoyant, little-known Haydn symphony, the program shows composers in a largely (though by no means exclusively) carefree musical state of mind.

What is the longest running musical in New York City history? No, it's not PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, CHICAGO or THE LION KING. It's that little musical, THE FANTASTICKS, with book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt. It's been on the boards in Manhattan for over 56 years.

BWW Interview: Musical Theater Project Looks Behind the Scenes of 'FIDDLER'

In September, 1964, Broadway welcomed what was to become one of the major musical theatre events. With a score highlighted by 'Sunrise Sunset,' 'If I Were a Rich Man,' 'To Life,' and 'Matchmaker,' 'FIDDLER ON THE ROOF' opened to rave reviews, sold out houses, and unbridled praise. The path to that September day was not easy.
Riverside Symphony to Present Program Featuring Bach & More at Lincoln Center, 1/23

George Rothman will lead Riverside Symphony in a performance of Arthur Honegger's masterful Symphony No. 2, a meditation on the horrors of World War II whose hopeful ending echoes the chorale finale of Bach's heart-stopping Cantata No. 51 featuring soprano sensation Nell Snaidas. Featured in the film classic "Black Rain," Takemitsu's exquisite modern Romantic opus, Death and Resurrection, reveals spiritual concerns similar to those of Honegger over the same cataclysmic event as experienced in the Pacific theater, while the brilliant early 18th century English composer Charles Avison - unsung to this day - is represented by one of 12 luminescent, unique creations fashioned around works for solo keyboard by Bach contemporary Domenico Scarlatti.

Riverside Symphony Concert Will Take Place at Alice Tully Hall on 2/2

Music Director George Rothman will lead Riverside Symphony in the second concert of the orchestra's 32nd season on Saturday evening, February 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. This fascinating program for string orchestra, harp and keyboards, will feature violinist Arnaud Sussmann performing Poul Ruder's first violin concerto-recorded by Riverside Symphony to international acclaim in 1995-as well as "Winter" from the The Four Seasons, the iconic work that inspired Ruders' hauntingly beautiful composition. Early Danish master Carl Nielsen is represented his first mature opus, a disarming, seldom-played gem, and Tchaikovsky's widely beloved Romantic showpiece (with a nod to Mozart) brings the program to a rousing finish.
