George Norbert Volk

George Norbert Volk was born in Staples, MN, USA on October 31, 1909, to George Valentine Volk and Clara Mertons. His grandfather was Phillip Volk, who worked as an Indian Scout for General George Armstrong Custer, U.S. Army, but was not present at the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

George Norbert Volk was one of the very first SAG members, receiving his membership in the early 1930's. He performed off Broadway in several plays, including Leslie Howard's "HAMLET" in 1936. Later in life he was chosen for bit speaking parts in movies such as "Bob & Carol, Ted & Alice", and "Tora Tora Tora" in 1970. He played the part of The Inquisitor in the Jean Anouille play "The Lark" in Orleans, France in 1965, and, Colonel Pickering in both of the Burbank Auditorium productions of "My Fair Lady", a play, in the 1960's and 1970's. Incidentally, Volk's wife, Ann-Marie "Mimi" Volk, played the part of Mrs. Higgins in that same play.


Three of Volk's children acquired professional status as follows:
Phil "Fang" Volk, Original Bassist of rock band "Paul Revere & The Raiders" 1964 - 1967;
Marilou Volk Hammergren performed globally with Johnny Mathis as part of the original Young Americans singing group, and later "The Establishment" singing group, 1965 - 1970;
Irene Volk Mathis, the wife of Ralph Mathis, (brother of Johnny Mathis) performs until the present in the rock band "Ralph Mathis & Charisma", in Thousand Oaks, Los Angeles County, CA.

George Norbert Volk performed in movies and plays with well-known actors such as John & Ethel Barrymore, Charles McGlaughlin, Fred McMurray, Anthony Quinn, Barry Fitzgerald, John Carradine, Natalie Wood, Elliott Gould, Robert Culp, Martin Balsam, Jason Robards, & Edward Andrews.


Volk passed away in Las Vegas, NV on August 18, 1992, survived by his 6 living children. (His eldest, George Francis Volk, a Captain & Pilot in the U.S. Army, was killed while serving in the Vietnam War in 1967.
