BIO

Gabriel Vega Weissman is a New York based director and playwright. His directing work includes Guards at the Taj at the Central Square Theatre (IRNE Nominee for Best Play; Elliot Norton Winner for Best Actor, Boston Globe Top 10 Theatre OF 2018), Charles Cissel's Must (Theatre at St. Clements, produced by Bruce Willis); Steel Magnolias (Bucks County Playhouse, co-directed with Marsha Mason); Making the Move (Edinburgh Festival Fringe) as well as work directed for and developed with companies including New York Theatre Workshop, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Hangar Theatre, National Black Theatre, Castillo Theatre, Pipeline Theatre Company, New Light Theatre Project and NYMF. He also serves as director to Emmy Award nominated actor and musician, Tituss Burgess on his concert events (Kennedy Center, summer 2019 and Carnegie Hall, forthcoming, in winter 2020).

​As a writer, Gabriel's collection of short plays, Loose Canon (co-written with Brian Reno) played a sold out run at the 2015 New York City International Fringe Festival and won the TheatreMania Audience Choice Favorite Award. Loose Canon is now licensed and published by Dramatists Play Service, Inc and has been produced internationally. Their adaptation of Aristophanes' The Birds was commissioned and produced by the University of Scranton.

​Gabriel also has had fruitful and rewarding experience as an Associate Director, on Broadway productions of Florian Zeller’s The Height of the Storm (starring Eileen Atkins and Jonathan Pryce), Long Day’s Journey Into Night (Starring Jessica Lange; 2016 Tony Nominee, Best Revival of a Play), the world premiere of David Mamet’s China Doll (starring Al Pacino) and the Roundabout Theatre Company's production of The Winslow Boy (starring the late, great Roger Rees) as well as off-Broadway premieres from writers including Martin McDonagh, Doug Wright, Athol Fugard, Dominique Morisseau and Rajiv Joseph. He proudly serves as Associate Director to actor/playwright/director Ruben Santiago-Hudson on his play Lackawanna Blues.

​Gabriel is an alum of the Drama League Director's Project, Lincoln Center Directors Lab, Manhattan Theatre Club Directing Fellowship and has spent three seasons with the Williamstown Theatre Festival. In 2015 he was the finalist for the inaugural Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Directors Fellowship. He is a 2019/2020 New York Theatre Workshop 2050 Fellow.



He is a member of SDC and the Dramatists Guild.

The Lucille Lortel Theatre is pleased to announce the recipients of the 3rd Annual NYC Public High School Playwriting Fellowship, created as an opportunity for aspiring young writers citywide to get unparalleled access to professional theater artists for mentoring. The Fellows and Finalists of the program represent every borough of NYC. Each aspiring playwright submitted an original 10-minute play, and was judged by the following panel of playwrights and directors: Preston Burger, Gethsemane Herron, A.J. Muhammad, Cherry Lou Sy, and Gabriel Vega Weissman. Plays were chosen based on dramatic structure and the playwright's individual voice.
