BWW Review: NEXT TO NORMAL at Blackfriars Theatre

Lights up. Enter the whirlwind. Blackfriars Theatre's production of NEXT TO NORMAL drops its audience smack in the middle of an emotional storm. The 2010 Pulitzer Prize winning rock musical details a family's sixteen-year struggle with trauma, centering on bipolar disorder. Groundbreaking in style and scope, Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey's smash hit garnered eleven Tony nominations and won three. It has been celebrated for exploring hard-hitting subject matter without the dewy-eyed sentimentality that so often infects this theatrical genre. Fortunately, Blackfriars' production delivers with the power and grit of the original Broadway production.

Blackfriars Theatre's 4th show of its 70th Anniversary Season shares the story of a family: Dad's an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling manic depression for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family's story with love, sympathy and heart.

Additional supporting cast includes Bill Skarsgard ('IT'), Jack Reynor ('Midsommar'), Forrest Goodluck ('The Revenant'), Jeff Wahlberg ('Dora and the Lost City of Gold'), Michael Gandolfini (The Deuce) and Kyle Harvey ('The After Party').

This funny, powerful, and poignant journey with its twists and turns offers catharsis and understanding for those wise and brave enough to take it.  I strongly encourage doing so.
