Choreographer Erin Kilmurray's Femme-powered Dance Work Returns To Chicago
Chicago-based dance artist Erin Kilmurray has announced a month-long engagement for her femme-powered dance work, the Function. Staged in a runway environment in the Land and Sea Dept. warehouse, the Function gives audiences front row access to this playground of choreography and objects created by dancers, DJs, and designers.

Haven Theatre presents its fourth DIRECTORS HAVEN, the company's ever-growing initiative annually showcasing the talents of three rising directors. This season, Charlotte Drover directs Madame Rachilde's surreal horror ballet THE CRYSTAL SPIDER, with translation by Daniel Gerould; Airos Sung-En Medill helms Josefina Lopez' heartfelt and healing SIMPLY MARIA, OR THE AMERICAN DREAM; and Dani Wieder directs an imaginative take on William Inge's drama PEOPLE IN THE WIND. The three productions, which will have the support of a full production team, will run back-to-back in one program. DIRECTOR'S HAVEN 2018 will play October 15 - 31, 2018 at Haven Theatre's resident home, The Den Theatre (2A), 1331 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. Weatherford Award For Non-Fiction Announced
University Press of Kentucky author Carol Boggess has been named the winner of the 2018 Weatherford Award for Non-Fiction for her biography James Still: A Life. The award is presented annually by Berea College and the Appalachian Studies Association to outstanding books of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry that showcase unique aspects of Appalachian life and culture. It was created in 1970 to honor the lives and legacies of W.D. Weatherford Sr. and his son Willis D. Weatherford Jr.
The University Press of Kentucky Releases EVERY LEAF A MIRROR: A JIM WAYNE MILLER READER
Jim Wayne Miller (1936–1996) was a prolific writer, a revered teacher and scholar, and a pioneer in the field of Appalachian studies. During his thirty-three-year tenure at Western Kentucky University, he helped build programs in the discipline in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio, and worked tirelessly to promote regional voices by presenting the work of others as often as he did his own. An innovative poet, essayist, and short story writer, Miller was one of the founding fathers and animating spirits of the Appalachian renaissance. “Jim was the first person I ever heard talk about such a thing as Appalachian writing,” said novelist Robert Morgan.

The artists present "Die Jahrhundertwende," a program featuring songs by two of the last great romantic Lieder composers (Wolf and Brahms) and two pioneers of modernity (Schoenberg and Berg). Along with two less famous but exceptionally interesting transitional figures (Zemlinsky and Pfitzner), the program explores the astonishing variety in German Song during this pivotal 15 years.
