Union Avenue Opera Celebrates 25th Festival Season
Over 21 artists will make their Union Avenue Opera (UAO) debut this summer as the company celebrates its 25th Anniversary Season. The seven-week summer season will open Friday, July 5 with Bernstein's hilarious, philosophical, and fast-paced take on Voltaire's 1759 biting satire of the same name, Candide and will feature the return of Christine Brewer to the UAO stage. The season continues through August 24th with performances of Puccini's operatic blockbuster La boheme, a tribute to UAO's tradition of presenting operas in original languages, and the St. Louis premiere of Tom Cipullo's Glory Denied, the true saga of Vietnam veteran Colonel Jim Thompson, the longest-held American POW in US history.

BWW Reviews: Union Avenue Opera's LA CENERENTOLA (CINDERELLA) Enchants
Jacopo Ferretti (libretto) and Gioachino Rossini's (composer) re-imagining of the fairy tale LA CENERENTOLA (CINDERELLA) is a clever and charming take on the original work that's suitable entertainment for the entire family. Apparently, the self-described 'jocular drama' was initially met with some hostility when it debuted in 1817, but has gone on to be a very popular piece, adding a number of neat little tweaks to the story, and offering up a wonderful leading part for a coloratura contralto that actually reaches the range of mezzo soprano. Union Avenue Opera's current production is delight, with strong, engaging performances driving this familiar, but reworked classic.
Union Avenue Opera Announces 2011 Festival Season
Union Avenue Opera (UAO) prepares to raise the curtain on its 17th Festival Season. After great success with last season's local premiere of Tchaikovsky's psychological drama Pikovaya Dama (Queen of Spades), the comedic operetta Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan, and the romance of La fille du régiment (Daughter of the Regiment) by Donizetti, the company brings two well-loved operas and one local premiere to the stage at 733 North Union Boulevard: Puccini's Turandot, Rossini's La Cenerentola (Cinderella) and Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking.
