BWW Review: STORYVILLE RISING Captivates with Stories but Little Plot

It's difficult to see where creator, writer and director of "Storyville Rising", currently playing at Seattle Immersive Theatre, David Crellin was trying to go with his show. I mean, it's certainly a fascinating look, supported by some wonderful performances, into the world of the red light district in New Orleans at the turn of the century and all the seedy undertones it had to offer, but it lacks a through line to pull it all together.

BWW Review: Dark and Edgy IN ARABIA WE'D ALL BE KINGS at Theater Schmeater

Stephen Adly Guirgis has made a name for himself for creating glimpses inside the worlds of the rougher and edgier parts of town. Places inhabited by junkies, hookers and criminals like those in his shows 'In Arabia We'd All Be Kings' currently at Theater Schmeater and 'The Motherf**ker with the Hat' currently from Washington Ensemble Theatre (yes, we have two Guirgis shows in town right now). But while the characters in both shows are well written and developed and thoroughly engaging, those in 'In Arabia …' seem to be lacking a complete narrative or plot making it more of a character study than a story.
Theater Schmeater to Stage NW Premiere of IN ARABIA WE'D ALL BE KINGS

Theater Schmeater is pleased to announce the West Coast Premiere of Stephen Adly Guirgis' early play, In Arabia, We'd All Be Kings. The winner of the 2015 Tony (for Between Riverside and Crazy), Guirgis weaves a desperate tale of people caught in the gears of progress fueled by faceless movers and shakers. Echoing William Saroyan, Guirgis characters' lives intersect in a run-down bar fated for demolition.
