Forbidden Love and Royalty: Dueling Themes in E2 at REP Stage
Clearly, the story of a king who would, legally speaking, seem like the safest person in the land, but who nonetheless is slain, as is his lover, because their relationship is considered taboo, seems facially like a perfect vehicle to provide that treatment. But it simply isn't, or at least not without more work. There are too many complications unique to a royal situation, as this play cannot help showing.
Actors' Shakespeare Project Sets New Venues, Casts for 2015-16 Season
Actors' Shakespeare Project (ASP) today revealed new venues and casting for the next two productions for the 2015/16 Season, Affairs of the Heart. The company's 12th season opened with the tragedy in Othello, now playing until October 25 at The Modern Theatre at Suffolk University. Next ASP explores romance in The Winter's Tale, war and strife in Richard II, and comedy in The School for Scandal. "ASP strives to present bold themes-the kind audiences not only expect, they demand of us," says Artistic Director Allyn Burrows. "Our upcoming productions will deliver on that expectation, offering up a bounty of theater at the extremes of human emotion." BWW Reviews: The 33rd Annual Elliot Norton Awards
Gaiety ruled at the 33rd Annual Elliot Norton Awards ceremony as Ryan Landry, impresario of the Gold Dust Orphans, received the Elliot Norton Prize for Sustained Excellence, and comedian-actress-jazz musician Lea DeLaria was the Guest of Honor. Bragging rights went to American Repertory Theater with seven wins in the large theater categories, while Lyric Stage Company led all midsize theaters with four wins.
BWW Reviews: GOD'S EAR: Cries and Whispers
Actors' Shakespeare Project takes a break from the Bard to stage the first Boston area production of Jenny Schwartz's linguistically-rich play GOD'S EAR. Thomas Derrah directs and draws authentic, heartbreaking performances from Tamara Hickey and Gabriel Kuttner as a married couple grieving the tragic loss of their son. Humor and hope rise to the surface from the depths of their suffering.

BWW Review: World Premiere of Walt McGough's PATTERN OF LIFE
PATTERN OF LIFE asks a lot of questions and challenges the audience to search for their own answers. In this play about life and death, McGough exposes a situation that most of us have not thought about very much and asks us to put ourselves in the other person's sandals. Director Bridget O'Leary and the cast of Nael Nacer and Lewis D. Wheeler focus on the human aspect of the story.
BWW Review: TONGUE OF A BIRD Doesn't Fly
Ellen Mclaughlin's TONGUE OF A BIRD is the first show in New Repertory Theatre's inaugural Next Rep Black Box Festival. No one can dispute the intimacy of the venue, or the up-close-and-personal flavor of the production, directed by Emily Ranii and featuring an all-female cast. This band of sisters bares the souls of their characters and supports each other like birds in chevron flight, but the play lacks sufficient lift to let them soar beyond the blue horizon, or over the peaks of the Adirondack Mountains where the story takes place.
