Witness the Birth Of Brand New Plays at The Players!
From July 31 to August 4, The Players is where it starts! For 16 years, The Players Centre for Performing Arts has served as an incubator for fledgling and seasoned playwrights to hone their craft of fable, and this year is no different. The 16th annual New Play Festival celebrates local playwrights and their penchant for the art of storytelling. This week-long event will showcase newly written works that have not yet been produced anywhere. Five plays were chosen by a panel of judges from a bevy of submissions to compete over these five days to be fully produced in The Players backstage space next season. Each play will be presented in 'readers theatre' (rehearsed readings) format to best showcase the literature. The event is coordinated by local theatre maven Sandra Musicante and will also feature a brief talkback session led by Artistic Director Jeffery Kin after each play. This past year's winner, Connie Schindewolf's 'Mammoth Bones' will premier August 22 through 27.
BWW Review: LAUGHING WILD at L.I.P. Service Productions
This weekend, local alternative theatre company L.I.P. Service Productions opened their newest work, LAUGHING WILD by Christopher Durang (author of the 2013 Tony Award-winning VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE). With only two speaking actors and a minimal stage, the oddball comedy centers around an strange, but unextraordinary event: a manic woman assaults an average man in the tuna fish aisle of a grocery store. Performed as two thirty-minute monologues and one thirty-minute scene, these over-the-top characters bounce back and forth like a pinball trying to rack up a bonus play in an arcade game. Although the style of comedy in LAUGHING WILD isn't necessarily my taste, I must admit I found myself laughing a number of times, especially as the stories eventually unfolded.

Photo Coverage: Playwrights Horizons Gala Honors Bob Moss!
Acclaimed Off-Broadway theater company Playwrights Horizons just held its annual Spring Gala on Monday evening, May 5 at the event space 583 Park Avenue. Titled 'IN THE BEGINNING', the evening honored the theater company's Founding Artistic Director Bob Moss. An artistic director, stage director and teacher for thirty-seven years, Bob founded Playwrights Horizons in 1971 and gave the theater its unique and enduring mission. Three years later, Bob moved the theater to then-derelict West 42nd Street. He founded the 42nd Street Gang, which, with the 42nd Street Development Corporation, envisioned and spearheaded the renovation and creation of 42nd Street's Theatre Row, and gave Playwrights a permanent home. He served as the company's Artistic Director for ten years through 1981. He was also the director of the Playwrights Horizons Theater School, an affiliate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He continues to direct and teach at theaters and colleges across the country, and has mentored hundreds of young theater actors, writers and directors.
