The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced today that poet, playwright, writer, filmmaker, director, civil rights activist, and educator Kathleen Collins will receive the inaugural Icon Tribute posthumously during the 2021 Gotham Awards Ceremony. Nina Lorez Collins will accept the inaugural Gotham Icon Tribute on behalf of her mother.

After ushering in a new era in independent and horror filmmaking with 1968's groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead, Romero embarked on a singular, influential four-decade career, imbuing his all-American nightmares with satiric and deadly serious commentaries on issues like race, capitalism, militarism, and government mistrust. In Romero's films, the monsters are not the other-they are us.
BAM Presents HORROR NOIRE: A HISTORY OF BLACK HORROR
On Monday, February 4 at 7pm, BAM presents the east coast premiere of Xavier Burgin's Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror (2019), a new documentary exploring a century of genre films that by turns utilized, caricatured, exploited, sidelined, and finally embraced Black Americans in Hollywood, tracing a secret history through their connection to the horror genre. The documentary will be followed by a panel discussion with author, educator, and Horror Noire executive producer Tananarive Due, filmmaker R. Shanea Williams, comics author Greg Anderson Elysee, and Horror Noire co-writer/producer and Graveyard Shift Sisters founder Ashlee Blackwell, as well as a screening of Rusty Cundieff's classic urban horror anthology, Tales from the Hood (1995).
