CABARET LIFE NYC: Watching Some 'Angels' Take Wing and Other Observations From a Cabaret Summer
One of the biggest downers perpetrated by American culture is the characterization of Labor Day weekend as the 'unofficial end of summer.' But given what has passed for cabaret entertainment-at least the shows I was able to attend--since the 'unofficial start of summer' on Memorial Day weekend, the end of summer can't come soon enough. But my dismay over the hours lost watching average shows this season was tempered a bit by the pride and joy I felt watching the June performances of three strikingly attractive and talented 30ish brunettes with powerhouse voices-- Jackie Kristel, Karen Gross and Jodi Beck, who all staged entertaining shows as spring was turning to summer.

Manhattan Theatre Source to Close in January 2012
Manhattan Theatre Source, the Greenwich Village theatre space named 'one of the top five Off-Off Broadway theaters in New York' by New York Magazine - will close its doors permanently in January 2012, it has been announced by the MTS Board of Directors. 'Despite efforts to save it, we have finally reached a point where we can no longer sustain the running of our space at 177 MacDougal Street,' stated Board member Doug Silver. 'Our deficits have grown too high, and the terrible economy has badly hurt small theater companies in NYC, not only The Source itself, but even more significantly the companies that we depend on to rent our theater all year long. These harsh realities have left us no choice but leave our space.'

Review - The Greenwich Village Follies: Interesting People On MacDougal Street
From Jerry Herman's Parade to Martin Charnin's No Frills Revue to nights with Betty Comden, Adolph Green and The Revuers, the original song and sketch revue has been a favorite of downtown audiences for nearly a century. With The Greenwich Village Follies, a new show that takes its name from a legendary production from the 1920s, composer/lyricist Doug Silver and bookwriter/lyricist Andrew Frank not only capture the smart, freestyle irreverence that made downtown revues so popular, but they use the format to offer an eighty-minute lesson on the history of America's first haven for artists, free-thinkers and non-conformists.
