Czech Center Museum Houston Founder Effie Rosene Passes Away
Effie Marie Sojak Rosene passed away early Mother's Day morning, May 12, 2019. She was born November 10, 1932 to Frank Sojak and Christine Lezak Sojak, Czech immigrant farmers, in the Frydek/Simonton area of Texas. She grew up in the Rio Grande Valley with 15 brothers and sisters and graduated from Rio Hondo High School. She attended St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Houston. She was working as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital when she met the love of her life, Willard George (Bill) Rosene.
Second Book in Roller Derby Girl Power Series is Released
The second book in the fun and confidence-inspiring series for tweens, Dorothy's Derby Chronicles' 'Woe of Jade Doe,' has been released in book stores nationally. In the series, which began with book one, 'Rise of the Undead Redhead,' the main character, Dorothy Moore, and her pals learn important lessons about being yourself and working as a team while rolling through adventures of mystery and roller derby in this diverse series.

Roller derby skaters are today's new superheroes, and Dorothy's Derby Chronicles' Rise of the Undead Redhead raucously celebrates this new breed of junior roller derby champion. Illustrated in a graphic novel style, the book's creator's Meghan Dougherty and Alece Birnbach, will join the artists of Denver Comic Con in its third year at the Denver Convention Center, June 13-15, Booth A14 in the Artist's Valley.

The music lineup at Lincoln Center Festival 09 includes US debuts by Algerian music icon Idir and Moroccan Chaabi singer Najat Aatabou; a double bill with Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara, and Issa Bagayogo; and a tribute to celebrated New Orleans songwriter Wardell Quezergue, featuring a roster of noted musical artists from that city's annual Ponderosa Stomp music festival.
