Diane Pennington left the Richmond theatre scene and working with the talents of R.L. Rowsey to set out for NYC in the early 80’s to pursue her dreams in musical theatre. While education in a vocal performance from Oklahoma Baptist University didn’t quite prepare her for the rigors of attempting a career in NY theatre, she jumped into “show biz” in a touring company of “Chicago”. Returning to NY, she landed her first Broadway show in the revival of “Brigadoon” with Agnes de Mille and Vivian Matalon (director). Over the next two decades, Diane performed in national and international tours of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”, “Evita” and originated the role of “Shirley” on Broadway in Alan Jay Lerner’s final show, “Dance A Little Closer”. Diane also performed in the pre-Broadway workshop of “Wicked”.
Her regional work includes the roles of Fastrada in “Pippin”, Velma Kelley in “Chicago” opposite Susan Stroman, Salome in “The Robber Bridegroom”, The Beggar Woman in “Sweeney Todd”, Rhetta in numerous productions of “Pump Boys and Dinettes”, Judy Garland in “Judy” and as Domina in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”.
Diane’s film and recording work includes vocals on the animated features of The Prince of Egypt (Dreamworks) , Gepetto (Disney), and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney). She can be heard on Stephen Schwartz’ CD’s as well.
