Review: THE LOWER DEPTHS at the Erickson Theater
This weekend, Intiman Theatre and The Seagull Project opened their outstanding, heart-wrenching, and purposefully uncomfortable production of Maxim Gorky’s The Lower Depths. Housed at the Erickson Theater, the extremely cohesive 14-person cast takes the audience on a journey that is intertwined with effective social commentary and award-worthy performances.

BWW Review: THE NERD at Taproot Theatre
Larry Shue’s raucous comedy “The Nerd” was a staple of midrange to small theaters all over back in the 80’s and 90’s. It was zany, smart, and didn’t require too many outlandish elements. So, I was fairly excited to catch this new local production currently being offered at Taproot Theatre, especially with the people in the cast. However, I’m not sure if the show is just not that funny anymore or if this production missed the mark but, while still having some definite gut buster moments, much of it fell flat.

Finish strong and they'll forgive a multitude of sins. This old adage of the theater rings truer than ever in this TV-binging, short attention span world in which we live. Unfortunately, the folks at Book-It Repertory Theatre didn't take that into account with their current production of "Behold the Dreamers" which started off slow, then picked up and really engaged in the middle and then ended with a whimper.

Adapted and directed by Myra Platt, Mbue masterfully weaves a story of class divide, immigration and marriage in her remarkable debut novel. Jende and Neni Jonga have recently emigrated from Cameroon to America to try to make a new life for themselves and their young son. When the Great Recession starts to upend the economy, the Jongas begin to grasp the fragility of the American dream. Behold the Dreamers plays June 6-30, 2019 (Opening/Press Night on Saturday, June 8) at The Center Theatre.

BWW Review: ArtsWest's M BUTTERFLY - A Story of Passion and Intrigue Without the Passion or Intrigue
In David Henry Hwang's play "M Butterfly" there's a few things you can take away. First there's the actual historical comparison to the real relationship between French diplomat Bernard Boursicot and Shi Pei Pu, a Peking opera singer. Second there's the cultural lesson of Westerners predilection to view Easterners in a certain, subservient light. And finally, there's the love story between a man trapped in a world and profession that used him and another man who claimed he didn't know his lover was also male. All those things should add up to a fascinating evening, unfortunately the current production at ArtsWest is told to us in such a bland and static way that the evening is just plain boring.

An Evening With Satan will play in Seattle November 16-19 Artistic team and husband and wife David Quicksall and Rachel Glass, who have worked independently, as well as together in the Seattle theatre community since 1998, are producing a play they have co-written, a one-man show called An Evening with Satan which will star Quicksall and is directed by Glass. It will play for a very limited run at 18th & Union, November 16-19, with the possibility of an extension.

Power shifts, betrayal, adultery, rape, murder and lots and lots of blood. No it's not the latest Tarantino film but it might as well be as Seattle Shakespeare Company puts up their latest effort, "Titus Andronicus" but with a dark and edgy grindhouse feel. But beyond all the blood there's still some wonderful Shakespeare behind it and some stirring moments from the cast.
