Review: EDINBURGH 2024: WILLY'S CANDY SPECTACULAR, Pleasance Dome
Willy’s Candy Spectacular, written by Richard Kraft and Andy Fickman is a musical parody of the infamous Willy Wonka immersive experience in Glasgow back in February, in which families paid £35 for tickets and were greeted with an empty warehouse, two jellybeans for each child and a bizarre character known as The Unknown.
Edinburgh 2024 Review: THE MOSINEE PROJECT, Underbelly Cowgate
As slick and suave as its performers’ suits, The Mosinee Project is a curious little piece of documentary theatre. It takes as its subject an experiment carried out in the American midwest in 1950: to demonstrate the threat of communism, agents staged a faux communist takeover of the small town of Mosinee. It’s a fascinating set-up, but unfortunately the show doesn’t quite live up to its intrigue.

Review: SAP, Soho Theatre
Rafaella Marcus pinpoints the eternal bisexual struggle in Sap, which has come to London after a starry sell-out run at Edinburgh Fringe last year. She explores prejudice and stereotype, fetishisation and biphobia through a precise commentary wrapped into a viscerally poetic tale. When Daphne lies by omission, she accidentally and nonconsensually enters a dark, twisted game.

Review: THE BEACH HOUSE, Park Theatre
In a landscape dominated by a dearth of lesbian stories, it’s refreshing to find one that doesn’t deal with sexuality at all, but focuses on the negotiations of parenthood and the complications of personal connections.
BWW Review: BROKEN LAD, Arcola Theatre
This new play raises interesting questions about father-son relationships in a world in which middle-aged men can struggle to find a role, but its lack of detail prevents its potential being realised fully

BWW Review: NASSIM at Magic Theatre Utilizes an Unorthodox Structure to Find What Connects Us
Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour's eponymous play a?oeNassima?? currently enjoying an all-too-brief run at the Magic Theatre adheres to an unorthodox format. Its sole actor, a different one at each show, does not see the script until it is unsealed onstage at the beginning of the actual performance. That actor can be of any gender, age or race. For the record, it was a very game Sean San Jose the night I attended. Soleimanpour himself is also on hand as a sort of enigmatic, mute guide and companion. Given that the actor knows virtually nothing about the play ahead of time, it would seem churlish of me as a theater critic to spill the beans in this review. Having now seen the play myself, I can also attest that the less you know about it going in, the richer your experience is likely to be.
EDINBURGH 2019: BWW Review: LEAVE A MESSAGE, Gilded Balloon
Two friends, Ed and Sarah, travel to the small squalid bedsit where Ed's father passed away a few days earlier. As they wade through the debris, the fragments of one lost life begin to coalesce, just as another starts to show signs of cracking. Will we be remembered for anything more than the mess we leave behind? Either way, the carpet is beyond saving. A brand-new play, based on an actual afternoon.
