New Book is Released on Conquering Shock and Trauma
Shock is the body's emotional response to a traumatic event such as a school shooting, IED explosion, rape, sudden death of a loved one, natural disaster (hurricane, earthquake or flood) or terrorist act (Boston Marathon bombing). Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical responses, causing the person affected to shut down mentally and physically. This overwhelming sensation of lost security and predictability threatens one's perception that the world is a safe place and affects 7.7 million adults in the U.S. alone and millions more worldwide annually, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.
Diane Zimberoff, LMFT, and David Hartman, LICSW, in 'Overcoming Shock: Healing the Traumatized Mind and Heart' (New Horizon Press, November 11, 2014) explore the effects of shock on our lives, including its impact on family dynamic, abuse in relationships, addictions, depression and mental stability. 'Overcoming Shock' provides proven strategies, techniques and tools for successful treatment, intertwined with stories of real-life examples of people who have successfully overcome the debilitating effects and post-traumatic ramifications of shock and trauma.
The authors are available for interviews. In addition, an article entitled Making Sense Out of Senseless School Shootings is appended to this release and may be used freely with attribution.
