DAVID A. DORWART

Mr. Dorwart’s writing includes a verse stage adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter (published in April of 2020). Other recent work includes the screen adaptation of Jann Arrington- Wolcott’s latest novel Deathmark. His work for screen also includes Best Supporting Actor, co-written with Michael Chepiga (developed for Susan Sarandon, Silly Goose Productions), and adaptations of H. H. Munro's (Saki) The Unbearable Bassington (semi-finalist BBC) and June Calendar's Ellen's Fugue (Finalist Lifetime). His work for the stage includes a translation/adaptation of Schiller's Mary Stuart (due out in 2021). Mr. Dorwart's writing also includes an adaptation and translation of The Life that We Lead, a Brecht-Weill Songplay (STC and WCVB-TV), The Heart of Man, a comedy based on the short stories of Saki (Lincoln Center, Open Eye Finalist; First Stage, LA and Playwrights Studio Theatre, Milwaukee). Also with Mr. Chepiga, Mr. Dorwart has written the screenplay All Honorable Men (Showtime Finalist) and received the Julie Harris Playwright Award for their original drama Conspiracy of Honor. Mr. Dorwart dramaturged Mr. Chepiga’s Getting and Spending, which went on to Broadway run at the Helen Hayes Theatre. Mr. Dorwart is currently adapting the 1695 fictional Vade Mecum, A Country Gentleman’s Companion for the British stage as well as completing his first novel The Ember Carrier due out in late 2021.

As a director, Mr. Dorwart directed the New York premiere of Lee Blessing's Down the Road with Lisa Eichorn and Eric Stoltz (Atlantic Theater), the American Premiere of Daniela Fischerova's Sudden Misfortune (Juilliard), and the world premiere of Frank Higgin's The Sweet By 'n' By with Judge Reinhold, Blythe Danner and Gwyneth Paltrow (Williamstown Theatre Festival). Other NY credits include the Broadway tributes 'S Wonderful, 'S Gershwin; The Best of Broadway; and An Evening with Bernstein and Weill (Lincoln Center); premieres of Alan Brown's A Moment of Impact (Circle Rep.), Glen Merzer's The Middleman (Equity Library), Nick Dear's Temptation and The Bed (West Bank); Robert Anderson’s The Kissing Was Always the Best (New Dramatists), Menotti's The Telephone (City Opera); As the World Turns (CBS) and Law and Order (NBC). Regional work includes Ford's Theatre, Pennsylvania Stage, Stage West, Merrimack Repertory, Charles Playhouse, American Premiere Stage, First Stage LA, Milwaukee Playwrights, Florida Studio, Portland Stage, Opera New England and the highly acclaimed and award-winning production of Gertrude Stein's and Virgil Thomson's The Mother of Us All for The Boston Lyric Opera.

Mr. Dorwart received his A.B. from Amherst College, his M.F.A. from Smith College, and conducted post grad work in Shakespeare at The University of Birmingham (England) and in film at NYU. He has held guest artist/teaching positions at Smith College, Suffolk University, UNH, MIT, Ratcliffe-Harvard, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, East Carolina University, Rutgers, University of Tennessee, NYU, and Juilliard. He is the recipient of the Julie Harris Playwriting Award, a postgraduate grant for the Royal Shakespeare Company, numerous John Golden Awards for directing, the Order of the White Lion from the Czech Republic and a TCG/PEW grant for Arena Stage and The Shakespeare Theatre, DC. Mr. Dorwart is a member of the Dramatists Guild and the Stage Directors and Choreographers; he is represented by Ron Gwiazda of the Abrams Artists Agency.
