BWW Reviews: Ocean State Theatre's THE LAST FIVE YEARS is a Tale of Two Musicals

Coincidentally, Ocean State Theatre Company happens to be presenting back-to-back productions which are two-person shows. The first one, The Meeting, was a serious drama depicting the fictional meeting between Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. The second one is their current production of a much different show, the musical love story, The Last Five Years. While the first one had a noticeable but minor difference in the charisma and stage presence of its two performers, the second one is an example of just how obviously wide that gap can become and just how much the difference between its two leads can impact a production.

Johnny Pool most commonly known today as a live radio personality in the morning working wth Elvis Duran and the Z Morning Zoo, is joining the cast of 'My Big Gay Italian Funeral' for one night only on March 16, 2014. Johnny is certainly no stranger to the gay community as he has been a bartender at the historic Cherry Grove, Fire Island for over 52 years! At the ripe age of seventy-two years old, Johnny now has decided to take on his next challenge by making his theatre debut in My Big Gay Italian Funeral. When asked for a quote he simply said in his very funny way, 'Hello Lady, I'm so excited to make an appearance Off-Broadway! You would be bananas to miss it!'

What began as a limited season revival of My Big Gay Italian Wedding in 2012, has now become the Wedding and the Funeral running in rep till the end of June of 2014. My Big Gay Italian Wedding will play every Saturday at 8pm, and My Big Gay Italian Funeral will continue to play every Sunday at 7pm till June 29th, 2014. The funeral celebrates its one year anniversary with a special performance on Sunday June 1st, 2014.

By Request has become one of The Rep's most sought after bi-annual concerts on the seacoast. A gathering of local and national artists culminates in a musical fundraiser for Seacoast Repertory Theatre. After the success of the past two years' events, The Rep welcomes back a few people from this past season to delight audiences with a concert of their musical choosing. Producing Artistic Director Craig Faulkner leads the troops of resident and guests artists., putting the audience in the hot seat to choose which songs they would like to hear. All of the proceeds of the By Request concerts goes directly back to the theatre, creating a fantastic experience for artist and patron alike.
