Dequina Moore is a marvel as the titular role of Josephine Baker. She plays this wide eyed and breathless, a girl who knows she is on the verge of something more and impatient to get there. She dances with abandon and sings like an angel.

It is often said amongst theatre-goers and theatre-makers alike that 'theatre is church'. When attending a well-done production, theatre can be a cathartic, revealing, and truthful experience for the audience member. In the case of Joyce Sylvester's 'church comedy' FREEDA PEOPLES, running at The Ensemble Theatre through April 14th, the claim that 'Theatre is church' is manifested quite literally. Sylvester's comedy focuses on the relationship between a church's leaders and its congregation, analyzing the relationships between those of religious authority and the church patrons. Taking a closer look at the goings-on of this community reveals that no one is who they claim to be, and that we could all use a dose of truth and healing in our lives.

The Ensemble Theatre Celebrated A Night To 'Elevate The Arts'

The Ensemble Theatre celebrated its 2018 Celebrity Black Tie Gala - Elevating the Arts! at the Hilton Americas-Houston, Saturday, August 18, 2018. Lead sponsors: H-E-B; Shell, BP America, Inc, United, Bracewell LLP, Frost Bank, Andrea and Jarvis Hollingsworth, Wendy and Vince Armstrong, were joined by a host of devoted corporations and individuals who continue to invest in the advancement of the theatre's mission to enlighten, entertain, and enrich diverse audiences. The Gala serves as the theatre's major fundraiser supporting its annual $2 million operating budget that includes six mainstage season productions, and its educational initiatives directed toward youth. The theatre's board of directors and staff welcomed more than 400 esteemed donors and supporters.

Bay Street Theater's World Premiere of MY LIFE IS A MUSICAL opened last night and runs through August 31. This musical comedy with book, music and lyrics by Adam Overett, is directed and choreographed by Marlo Hunter. Presented in association with Martin Platt, David Elliott, Cheryl Wiesenfeld, Joan Raffe& Jhett Tolentino, and Patrick Blake, with additional support from the Joseph Stein Fund for new musicals and Adriane and Jerry Cohen. Bay Street Theatre held its Second Annual Honors Benefit on Saturday, April 27 at East Hampton Point, hosted by funny-lady and Bay Street Thatre Board Member Joy Behar. This year the honorees were Hampton's Hometown Heroes including David Bray, Ana R. Daniel, Michael Grim and James Osburn. All four of the honorees support Bay Street as well as many other local businesses & non-profits in the Hampton's Community. The event is held Spring each year, not only to recognize outstanding patron involvement, but also to raise funds for its theatrical and educational programs.
