Around 2000 he wrote Princess Turandot, inspired by Carlo Gozzi's play written in 1762 (upon which Puccini's opera Turandot was based). Tresnjak's play was performed by the Blue Light Theater Company in New York City in December 2000.

Darko Tresnjak has received several awards for his work in theatre. He won the Obie Award for Direction for The Killer. He also won Outstanding Director of a Musical at the Drama Desk Awards for A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder, as well as Outstanding Director of a Musical at the Outer Critics Circle Awards for the same production. Additionally, he received the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder.
