Calpulli Mexican Dance Company (Calpulli) will premiere'Puebla: The Story of Cinco de Mayo' (Puebla) at Queens Theatre on April 13 - 14, followed by a national tour with performances in Texas, Georgia and New Jersey. The Queens-based Company, now in its 16th year, received a national award from the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) making the new production possible. Under the artistic direction of Alberto Lopez Herrera, 'Puebla' tells a universal tale of the underdog fighting impossible odds. The setting is the Battle of Puebla when a small army of Mexican soldiers and commoners defeated the French army, the strongest military force of the time, on the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo), 1862. Through folkloric and contemporary dance, live music and elaborate costuming, the Company will elaborate on the history of the now-famous date and celebrate the culture and people of Puebla. In 2019, Flushing Town Hall offers a breadth of outstanding global music, family programs, exhibitions, jazz and workshops. From January through June, Flushing Town Hall will present 72 programs, including 18 world music shows, 10 jazz performances, eight family programs, seven classical music concerts, three exhibitions, and more. The spring season is a continuation of 40th anniversary celebrations of the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts (FCCA), the steward of Flushing Town Hall.
NY's All-Irish Theatre Festival ORIGIN'S 1ST IRISH Kicks Off January 9
The 2019 Origin's 1st Irish Theatre Festival, New York's all-Irish theatre festival and the world's only festival devoted exclusively to producing the plays of contemporary Irish playwrights from around the world, settles in to its new January time slot, running three weeks from January 9 to 28. A total 17 events, including six mainstage productions from Belfast, Derry, Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Queens and Manhattan, will be seen in and out of competition. Among the productions, five are US premieres; one is a world premiere. 15 contemporary Irish writers are represented with work in performance.

Flushing Town Hall To Receive $60,000 Grant From The National Endowment For The Arts
National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the NEA's second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $60,000 to Flushing Town Hall for performing arts programming. The Art Works category is the NEA's largest funding category and supports projects that focus on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and/or the strengthening of communities through the arts.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) Commissioner Julie Menin today announced the revitalization of the Latin Media and Entertainment Commission (LMEC) for New York City. Comprised of 18 leaders from the vibrant Latinx creative community here in New York, the commission will leverage partnerships with the city's entertainment, government, and business entities. The mission of the LMEC is to cultivate the next generation of New York City-based Latinx media and entertainment professionals; to promote enhanced Spanish language content on mainstream and emerging media platforms; to attract and retain major Latinx media events in New York City; and to expand the audience for premier Latinx cultural content in New York City.
