Photo Coverage: Evolution Theatre's THE TEMPERAMENTALS
by Jerri Shafer - Jul 7, 2015
'Temperamentals' was a code word for homosexuals in the early 1950s, part of a created language of secret words that gay men used to communicate. The Temperamentals tells the story of two men - the communist Harry Hay and the Viennese refugee and designer Rudi Gernreich - as they fall in love while building the first gay rights organization along with Chuck Rowland, Bob Hull, and Dale Jennings, in the pre-Stonewall United States. It is a true story. This production is lovingly dedicated to the memory of Barbara Sokol.
BWW Reviews: Arouet's THE TEMPERAMENTALS - Important History Told with Care
by Jay Irwin - May 11, 2013
In these exciting times where state after state are ratifying same sex marriage laws and teens are taking their same sex boyfriends and girlfriends to school dances, we can sometimes lose sight of the people that fought to break down those barriers to get us where we are today. This is why stories such as the ones presented in the play "The Temperamentals" are so important. And the importance of this production and its stirring slice of history, currently being presented at the Ballard Underground, is not lost on the folks at Arouet as they tell the story with care and compassion.
BWW Reviews: A MAD MEN-Themed TEMPERAMENTALS at Rep Stage
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Sep 8, 2012
Almost everyone in this world is married or willing to go out on public dates with women to camouflage his real social life. Few of them can visualize, even to themselves, what it would be like to regard the gay halves of their lives as normal, continuous, and public. It is both touching and interesting to watch.

by Nancy Grossman - Apr 3, 2012
The Lyric Stage Company of Boston presents the Boston premiere of Jon Marans' Off-Broadway hit THE TEMPERAMENTALS, a chronicle of the love story between Harry Hay and Rudi Gernreich, founders of the Mattachine Society in 1950s Los Angeles. Director Jeremy Johnson's vision employs techniques of film noir to take the audience on a temperamental journey for a view of the grassroots effort that began to change the world, nearly two decades prior to the Stonewall Riots.

BWW Reviews: THE TEMPERAMENTALS Explores 50's Gay Activism
by Michael L. Quintos - Apr 29, 2011
In Jon Marans' thought-provoking bio-play THE TEMPERAMENTALS--now playing its West Coast Premiere at the Blank Theatre Company's 2nd Stage Theater in Los Angeles through May 22--a little-known bit of history is unearthed: More than a decade before the infamous Stonewall Riots marked the defacto start of the modern-day pro-gay rights movement in the United States, there actually existed a group of equally brave men who decided to 'come out' and be organized at a time when such truthfulness could mean putting their lives and livelihoods in grave jeopardy.
