BIO
Cliff Simon (Set Designer). In New York Cliff designed the original off-Broadway production of Fame (in its pre-Broadway run) at the Truck and Warehouse Theatre, as well as sets for Playwrights Horizons and T. Schreiber Studios. He designed several shows at the George Street Playhouse in New Jersey, a children’s musical version of The Nutcracker at the Cleveland Play House and many shows here at Zach (winner B. Iden Payne Award for Present Laughter) as well as for the Riverside and Maltz-Jupiter Theatres in Florida, the Walnut Street Theatre in Philly, Oguinquit Playhouse in Maine and La Mirada in L.A. 'Savage' is a powerful new musical conceived and developed by UAB Professor of Theatre Karla Koskinen. The touching story is based on the tragically true story of the life of Ota Benga played by the dynamic Royzell D. Walker. This young man from the Congo was paraded as an exotic attraction. This sheer cruelty and inhumane mindset is almost unimaginable. But then again American history has a predictably formulaic way glossing over racial autocracies. This wonderful musical boldly asks 'What makes a man a civilized man?'
