For those of us who have visited Ireland and basked in the bountiful love and generosity of its people, the plays of its most famous authors are striking in contrast. There are no strangers when one visits the Emerald Isle. However, the plays of Brian Friel, Sean O'Casey and John Millington Synge are rife with meditation, mourning and melancholy. (The latter author's 'Playboy of the Western Worlda?? caused riots in Dublin when initially staged in 1907. When the actors came to America in 1911, they were jailed).

Focusing on a shady businessman's rise to power, Brecht wrote this brilliant drama on the eve of World War II as a parable about the rise of Hitler and fascism. Lantern Artistic Director Charles McMahon directs a cast that includes Anthony Lawton as Arturo Ui, with Mary Lee Bednarek, Charlie DelMarcelle, Julia Hopkins, Gregory Isaac, Jered McLenigan, David Pica, Brian Anthony Wilson, and Frank X. Theater critics and members of the press are invited to request press comps for opening night on Wednesday, September 11 at 7 p.m. by contacting Anne Shuff at ashuff@lanterntheater.org. On Sunday, June 2 at 5:30pm, EgoPo will host its Annual Season Launch Party at the Boot & Saddle on South Broad Street. "Shepard Country" will kick off EgoPo's 2019-20 Sam Shepard Festival Season with a Country Western celebration featuring live music, line dancing, and a country feast. Headlining the evening will be Jawbone Junction, Philly's own Southern Rock theater band with line dancing by Giddy Up Philly and catering by Easy Passyunk's Redcrest Fried Chicken.
