James Ijames and Lloyd Suh to be Honored With 2022 Steinberg Playwright Awards

The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust has announced the names of the two outstanding early-to-mid-career playwrights who will be celebrated with 2022 Steinberg Playwright Awards in the amount of $100,000 each. This year’s recipients of the “Mimi” Awards are James Ijames and Lloyd Suh.

This week, top theatrical talent paid tribute to playwright Lynn Nottage, recipient of the 2010 ‘Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award', presented by The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust. Scenes highlighting Ms. Nottage's work (including Ruined, Intimate Apparel and a preview of her upcoming By The Way, Meet Vera Stark) were performed by actors Quincy Tyler Bernstine (In the Next Room), two-time Tony Award-winner and Oscar-nominee Viola Davis (Fences, King Hedley II), Kimberly Hébert Gregory (The Brother/Sister Plays), Russell Hornsby (Intimate Apparel), Tony Award-winner Karen Olivo (West Side Story, In the Heights) and Condola Rashad (Ruined). Playwrights Bruce Norris, Tarell Alvin McCraney and David Adjmi are the first recipients of the ?Steinberg Playwright Awards,' it was officially announced by playwright Tony Kushner at a press conference on Thursday, September 17th in New York City. The awards were established in 2008 by The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust to recognize up-and-coming playwrights at various stages of their early careers whose professional works show great promise. They will be presented at a ceremony on October 26th, at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theatre.

The 'Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award' was presented to Tony Kushner at a ceremony on Tuesday, October 21, at 620 Loft & Garden at Rockefeller Center. The honor comes with a cash prize of $200,000, making this by far the largest award ever created to honor and encourage artistic achievement in the American theater. Mr. Kushner was also presented with 'The Mimi,' a statue designed by Tony Award-nominated scenic designer and architect David Rockwell.
