Yuri Yunakov to Headline 20th Anniversary Herdeljezi Romani Music Festival
Voice of Roma, a human rights advocacy organization dedicated to the promotion of Balkan Romani (Gypsy) cultural arts and traditions, has announced the program for its 20th anniversary Herdeljezi Romani Music Festival to take place Saturday, May 6 at the Croatian American Center in San Francisco.
Esma 'Queen of Romani Song' to Headline Herdeljezi Music Fest
Kitka is pleased to announce Voice of Roma's 19th annual Herdeljezi Romani Music Festival, featuring the legendary 'Queen of Romani Song' Esma Redzepova & The Folk Masters Band from Macedonia in their final U.S. tour. This yearly event organized by Voice of Roma, a human rights advocacy organization dedicated to the promotion of Romani (Gypsy) cultural arts and traditions, celebrates Balkan Romani music, dance and culture. An evening concert and dance party will culminate a series of workshops for singers, instrumentalists and dancers. The Festival takes place Saturday, April 30 inReidenbach Hall at First Congregational Church of Oakland.

This year's festival will culminate in a dance party led by the high-octane Sazet Band from New York. Events earlier in the day include separate workshops for singers and instrumentalists led by members of Sazet Band, a dance workshop taught by Kosovo Romani activist and dance researcher Sani Rifati, and a panel discussion on Romani culture, music, history and human rights led by Rifati and Carol Silverman, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Oregon.
