BWW Review: WONDERLAND WIVES Breaks The Crystal Slipper With Raunchy Laughter at THEATRE DOWNTOWN
Walt Disney would turn over in his grave if he saw 'Wonderland Wives' at Theatre Downtown. That's the point. It is supposed to break apart the crystal slipper. This is a in your face comedy poking fun at the idea of perfect princesses in the family friendly genre. This is a fairy tale full of raunchy characters with very real issues. 'Wonderland Wives' is a comical and bawdy tale of what happens after the final words in the storybook saying 'And they lived happily ever after'. It's saturated with puns, one-liners, and language that would make any magic carpet blush. These Disney princesses act more like very-desperate housewives instead of storybook icons. Buddy Thomas's writing cleverly balances an uncomfortable comedy found in these iconic storybook characters dropping shock value vocabulary. It's definitely not for children. It's bawdy, trashy and campy fun. The characters display language and behavior that you may not indulge in regularly. But dang it if you cant click away from laughing so much.

BWW Review: Fantastic Z's DEVIL BOYS FROM BEYOND a Bit Too Campy
Fantastic Z Theatre is closing out their season of gay comedy with the campy take on 50's sci-fi, Buddy Thomas and Kenneth Elliott's 'Devil Boys From Beyond'. And while this crazy romp certainly has the fun of their previous shows, at times the camp gets to be a bit much to the point of lacking focus and it's there where the play suffers.
BWW Review: Stray Dog Theatre's Maniacally Funny DEVIL BOYS FROM BEYOND
Each December Stray Dog Theatre chooses an unconventional show to celebrate the season. It's always something unusual, and often something somewhat shocking. I like that idea of going against the grain, and giving audiences relief from the Christmas overload that all forms of media utilize at this time of year. To close out 2015, they've chosen the campy and wildly over the top DEVIL BOYS FROM BEYOND, a sort of mash-up of ideas plucked from 1950's and early 60's science fiction fare like Mars Needs Women and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. There's also an early effort from the UK called Devil Girl from Mars, which may have provided inspiration for authors Buddy Thomas and Kenneth Elliott (music and original sound design by Drew Fornarola). Whatever the case, this is a truly nutty, whacked-out comedy that has something to offend everyone, but somehow rises above its initial shock value with allusions to equal pay for women, and the need for the acceptance of alternative lifestyles. Stray Dog Theatre's latest yuletide foray is a delightfully twisted blast from the past!
Stray Dog Theatre to Present DEVIL BOYS FROM BEYOND
Men are from Mars; women are from Venus; all the rest are from Pluto. A high-camp parody of '50s B-movies and trashy romance novels, mixed with a dash of 'Adult Swim' cartoon. Fold in a heaping portion of screwball comedy and stir gently but keep it lumpy!
NAKED BOYS SINGING, MARRY ME A LITTE & More Set for Pandora Productions' 2013-14 Season
Pandora Productions kicks off its 2013-14 season in just nine days with Naked Boys Singing!, the needs-no-explanation (but we will: audiences are gonna LOVE IT) musical originally slated for Pandora's '12-'13 season but postponed due to casting issues. But that didn't dissuade us from making this most requested of all time production - a celebration of the male body yet much, much more - happen as the hottest kickoff ever to start the season.
Convergence-Continuum Presents GRACE, Opening 6/29
convergence-continuum continues its 2012 Season with the Ohio premiere of GRACE, a darkly comic, eerily tragic, sometimes hilarious, wholly timely play. It dives headfirst into questions of faith and religion (not necessarily the same thing at all).
