BIO
Bruce Avery is a Bay Area actor, director, and Theatre Arts professor at San Francisco State University. His PhD is from UC Santa Cruz, where he also worked as Dramaturge for Shakespeare Santa Cruz. His recent directing credits include Pericles, Prince of Tyre, Much Ado About Nothing, and Venus in Fur at SFSU, along with As You Like It, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Bread & Butter Theatre. Recent acting credits include Red and The North Pool (Bread & Butter Theatre), the Bay Area premiere of Sam Shepard’s Particle of Dread (Anton’s Well) and Dennis Shepard in The Laramie Project (SFSU). His favorite Shakespeare roles include Gravedigger and Polonius in Hamlet, Old Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, and Peter Quince in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

EURYDICE Comes to San Francisco State School of Theatre & Dance in October
Sarah Ruhl has been called a 'Playwright Laureate of Grief,' and Eurydice is her exploration of the grief she felt after the loss of her father, who died of cancer when she was twenty. In Ruhl's retelling of the Orpheus/Eurydice myth, the dead Eurydice reconnects with her dead father, and they revel in their chance to restore their love.

Bread & Butter Theatre to Return to the Stage This Winter With David Hare's SKYLIGHT
After a three year hiatus, Bread & Butter Theatre will return to Potrero Stage with David Hare's Tony and Olivier award-winning play Skylight. Skylight runs January 12 - 21, 2023. Opening Night is January 14, 2023 at 7:30 pm.

The African-American Shakespeare company is elated to announce what Artistic Director L Peter Callender is a calling a season of “splendor and renewal” featuring 4 productions, live-and-in-person: The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged); Cinderella; The Glass Menagerie; and Richard II. There will also be a special streaming-only edition of Twelfth Night.
