BWW Reviews: The East Coast Premiere Of FIVE PRESIDENTS At The Bay Street Theatre

I always say that the mark of a good story can make us alter the way we think. In attending the East Coast premiere of Five Presidents at the Bay Street Theatre, by way of the Arizona Theatre Company and Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, I actually found myself sympathizing, if slightly, for people that I, frankly, don't like… politicians.

BWW Reviews: Milwaukee Rep's World Premiere Reveals Top Politicians are Merely Men

Number 1, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, and a currently in office 42--these numbers represent five presidents and two portraits placed in a holding pen, a room, before Richard Nixon's (37) funeral on April 18,1994 in Yorba Linda, California. The men often identify each other by numbers instead of their names in Milwaukee Rep's World Premiere of Five Presidents.

BWW Reviews: FIVE PRESIDENTS Is Unimpeachable

In Rick Cleveland's ingenious Five Presidents, directed by Mark Clements and on stage at the Herberger Theatre, the 38th to the 42nd occupants of the Oval Office come to pay their respects to #37, Richard Milhous Nixon. It's a delicious concept and an undeniable hit, brought to life by the splendid performances of Jeff Steitzer as Gerald Ford, Martin L'Herault as Jimmy Carter, Steve Sheridan as Ronald Reagan, Mark Jacoby as George H. W. Bush, and Brit Whittle as the incumbent Bill Clinton.

BWW Reviews: CATF 2014 - NORTH OF THE BOULEVARD Is an Authentic Comedy About Middle-Class Conflicts

Written by Bruce Graham and directed by Ed Herendeen, North of the Boulevard is an enjoyable modern-day comedy with enough undertones of familial dysfunction and economic inequality to make the humor hit a little too close to home for many viewers. North of the Boulevard focuses on one evening near Christmas in a small time auto mechanic garage. Trip, Bear and Larry all work at typical middle-class jobs while Larry's father, Zee, is retired and generally acts as the elderly pain-in-the-ass around the shop. The four male friends get together, as usual, to discuss day-to-day lives and jobs and dream about easier lives with more money, where they could move to a nice neighborhood north of the boulevard. When tragedy strikes, the characters are faced with a gigantic moral dilemma, pushing each man to his ethical limit and showing how much greed, corruption and the prospect of one hundred grand can change both a friendship and a life.
BWW Reviews: CATF 2014: ONE NIGHT Features Excellent Special Effects and Performances, but Poor Plot and Pacing

Though featuring excellent individual performances by talented actors and spectacular lighting and special effects, One Night suffers from a confusing script, two dimensional characters and dragging pace.
BWW Reviews: Facing Moral Dilemmas in a Crumbling Garage - NORTH OF THE BOULEVARD at CATF

Trip needs to get himself and his family 'up north of the Boulevard' to a more civilized neighborhood. Then an unexpected circumstance dumps an opportunity in Trip's lap. The only problem is that, to take it, Trip would need to leave his integrity behind and possibly risk going to jail. Is getting north of the Boulevard worth it for Trip and his buddies? Does Trip even have a meaningful choice?
BWW Reviews: An Overstuffed ONE NIGHT at CATF

There are the bones here of a perfectly respectable play about rape and what comes after in the U.S. military and veterans' system. They are often overwhelmed by formulaic exposition and too much going on. The play needs to be broken down and retooled.
Photo Coverage: Inside Opening Night of THE RIVALS at The Pearl

Richard Brinsley Sheridan's classic romantic romp, The Rivals, returns to The Pearl for the hilarious story of Lydia Languish who is... languishing. She can imagine nothing more romantic than eloping with the impoverished Captain Beverly. Little does she know that 'Beverly' is really Jack Absolute, a wealthy aristocrat who fears the truth of his identity isn't nearly romantic enough for Miss Languish's taste. How will he win her-from himself?
