The Ballard Institute Presents Breakthrough Online Catalogue: LIVING OBJECTS: African American Puppetry Essays Edited By Dr. Paulette Richards

The events of the year 2020 have brought to light the degree to which African American culture has been misrepresented, distorted, or simply overlooked in the United States. This has been particularly true regarding African American puppet and object theater, which has rarely been the focus of sustained attention.

The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut will celebrate the rich world of African American puppetry in the United States with a four-day series of performances, presentations, discussions, film screenings, and workshops on Feb. 7 to 10, 2019 in Hartford and Storrs.

NIGHT FALL: Community Puppetry In Hartford With Anne Cubberly Comes to The Ballard Institute

Due to inclement weather, the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry has rescheduled its Nov. 15 Puppet Forum with Anne Cubberly, entitled Night Fall: Community Puppetry in Hartford, to take place Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. The forum will occur at the Ballard Institute Theater, located at 1 Royce Circle in Downtown Storrs, and will discuss the origins, aims, techniques, and aesthetics of this dynamic community performance event that has redefined the cultural life of Connecticut's capital.
The Ballard Institute Presents The Grand Opening Of LIVING OBJECTS: AFRICAN AMERICAN PUPPETRY

The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut will present the grand opening of its new exhibit Living Objects: African American Puppetry on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018 at 6:30 p.m., with refreshments served at 6:30 p.m. and a free tour beginning at 7 p.m. All events will take place at the Ballard Institute, located at 1 Royce Circle in Downtown Storrs. Ballard Institute Director John Bell comments 'we are extremely excited that this important element of African American culture and performance will be celebrated and experienced in an exhibition of national importance.' The exhibition will be on display through Sunday, April 7, 2019.
